Hey Guys, I bought a Bushmaster 16" shorty with AK brake a few weeks ago and am looking to get both some good clean (stuff that wont fail to fire, jams and so forth) .223 plinking rounds and self defense rounds. What do you think of Ultramax & S&B for plinking and what is your favorite ss109 & m193 rounds? Bottom line, what do you like, why and where do you get it? As far as self defense goes, what would you trust your life to? No homemade reloads please as I have no reloading supplies at this time. Also I have been getting NIW center Industries USGI mags date 12/91 & 1/92 for 20.00 each, does this seem fair to you and how many should I pick up? Sorry if this is a common question but I can seem to find much on it in the posts but then again I am still learning :) Thanks for the read guys & your help. Steve.

ultramax is ok for plinking, do not shoot fmj, accuracy is too poor. blackhills is excellent. if you go to the ammo site here on ar15 you will see a whole review on different types of ammo. all depends on what you want, accuracy or plinking. [beer]

I prefer accuracy with good knockdown power of course for both plinking & self defense, I have been hearing good things about Blackhills, what grain is preferred and the best place to get it? Anyone tested the S&B SS109 rounds to see how well they work? I do have some IMI SS109 coming in the mail this week that was made about a year ago. Or perhaps I should ask what NOT to buy instead :) Thanks. Steve.

As far as plinking goes, I've had great luck with the South African stuff in the battle packs. And I just got some Guatemalan stuff, and it's pretty good too. As far as the SS109, I'd save that stuff back for a rainy day. A little bit expensive for plinking. The mag prices aren't bad, but look around on this board, and on SubGuns ad board and you might come across some better deals. Buy as many as possible. I've got twenty 30 rounders, and one 20 rounder, and I still keep my eyes out for a good deal. Anyway, hope this helps.

Where are some good places to find Geogia Precision and does it need to be in such large lots or can I get a smaller lot to test it out first? Thanks for you help. Steve.

Forgive my lack knowledge but what is the TAP in the Hornady & the 2nd & the BT in the Win rounds mean? Part of the name or does it mean something else? I guess what I am asking is can I walk into a local gun store and ask for them by the names you have given and have the clerk know what I am looking for? Take care. Steve.

As far as acuracy, reliability and velocity goes I have been having real good luck with UMC L223R3 Wal Mart has it for $3.95 a box.

My experience (and alot of others) shows to stay away from steal cased ammo like Wolf brand. The steal case and laquered finish just seam to cause problems for the AR. S&B has always done very well in my AR. Check out www.ammoman.com for good prices and excellent service. sgtar15

Houston Cartridge Co. sells some really good .223. I have been buying it for 2 or 3 years. It's once fired Lake City brass with 55gr FMJ & 26gr of AA 2230. Accurate & reliable & only $130 per 1000rds. 1-800-776-6717 ColtShorty GOA KABA COA JPFO SAF NRA "I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted and I won't be laid a hand on. Georgia Arms www.georgia-arms.com ...has some good 55gr. FMJ reloads. Used to be around $125-130 per 1000, now it's jumped up to $150/1000, most likely because of the national situation. Hey Shorty, does Houston Cartridge Co. have a website by chance? For $130/1000, and using Lake City brass no doubt, I might want to give these guys' loads a shot.

I bought a 1000 rds of Dallas Reload Supplies last month at the gun show. It was 55 gr sp. Accuracy was minimal, but acceptable. Probably 2.5 -3 inches at 100 yrds, leupold scope, sandbags. From a rifle that shoots 1" with 68 gr bthp from black hills. No misfires on about 400 rds. Should work great for plinking. I also bought some vmax reloads, slightly more accurate. I have also shot Houston cartridge co. They are about the same. I guess I have to ppony up for the black hills stuff when I want accuracy. Maybe a new upper crom CLE too. :) WL

Black Hills reloads are just fine. Also for practice, American Eagle (Federal)is my top choice... very good, consistent ammo. Clean burning, too. The yellow box UMC (Remington) is also pretty good. For serious social work, I like the IMI M855, probably the best of the cheap stuff. Just picked up some SA battle packs ('85 mfg), don't know about them, have not shot them yet.

The best surplus ammo was the Canadian SS109 - C77. I wish it were available again.

Oh, the mags you have are just fine. I would have on hand at least 10 to 12 mags per rifle. Good mags are Adventure Line, Parsons, Center, Labelle, Bushmaster, DPMS, Sanchez, OKay, most any of the 30 rnd USGI mags. Avoid at all costs Cooper Industries (poor body welds and week springs).

UMC 55 grain is great blasting ammo with not too bad accuracy. As far as mags go I just picked up 6 Thermolds from RGUNS at $17 apiece, they all look brand new and worked very well, no jams at all. edited cuz I can't spell

Cheaper than dirt has Winchester 55gr FMJ reloadable as low as .19 a round ($191 per 1000).

Careful with that stuff Colt. Several local ranges here in Houston have banned the use of it after guns have detonated. Apparantly they used to be good, but they've gotten into the habit of double charging and even not chraging handgun rounds. I haven't heard about their rifle stuff. Just thought I'd warn you. T's Guns and Ammo in the Houston area, OTOH, is awesome.

I've never used their handgun loads, sounds like I should'nt either. I've never had any problems with their .223, don't have to worry about a double charge but a squib load can be just as dangerous. I do appreciate the warning though!! ColtShorty GOA KABA COA JPFO SAF NRA "I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted and I won't be laid a hand on.
