Vlad the Impaler is considered a huge hero in his homeland, like our George Washington. He was extremely brutal, even to his own people but he did stop the Muslims dead in their tracks. Imagine how they must felt as they marched into Transylvania only to find the roads lined with miles and miles of impaled bodies. Demoralizing to say the least. They must have thought that they were walking into hell itself. I believe the Pope granted Vlad a sainthood or equivalent for saving the Christian world from annihilation.
The author does make a major mistake in the article. Europeans did create large, expansive Empires before the Muslims and Mongols. There was the Greek empire, that streched all the way to India, Egypt and North Africa. And the Roman Empire, argueably the Greatest Empire ever "1000+ years", that spanned over those same geographical areas plus Northern Europe.
