I have a .223 from very early in their run, early 90's, so things may have changed. Think they have a short action, as well as long, now. Trigger's not all that great. The black nylon stock is awful flimsy.

Relieved the barrel channel and the stock fore-end twisted all about. Picked up a dark grey and black laminated stock, factory take off some one had listed. It always shot great, but the flex was annoying and it fixed the problem. Was I think $40.00. I prefer a more traditional profile. Couple of people are making stocks now, never liked that choate stock.

But they are pricey. HS Precision and McMillan both have em, think they are steep. Have HS Precision on my Remingtons, but not sure they shoot any better. $300-350ish. Are more comfortable for me.

Turner makes some too. No experience with them, but I've been told they do a nice job. Think theres a Varmint specialist in Ohio that sells them, or something similar. Couldnt find the link in my cursory search. He's in Delphos, OH if memory serves me.

I had one in .308 in a Choate stock. It was one of Lew Horton's 20" heavy barrels with a trigger job. Cost - $600. Here's my observations.

1. 3/4" groups using 168 gr match ammo. Up to 2" groups with milsurp.

2. Chaote stock could withstand a nuclear blast, but is HEAVY. Really suited for mounting wheels, and being re-deployed as field artillery. If your bench resting, no problemo. If you are humping thru the woods on a deer hunt, you're hating life.

2. Savage stock is JUNK.

3. Needs trigger work. or you can find replacement triggers.

4. Bolt works SLIGHTLY ragged compared to my Rem 700. But not that bad.

Pretty good entry level target (whatever your target of choice may be) rifle.
