Well after shooting my first year in High Power at my local club I found out I can purchase an M1 Garand from the CMP. I went over to thier sight and saw the the US standard issue was $500 and the Danish issue was $400. Is there any differance in these rifles other than price. I thinking it might kinda neat to be a little different and get the Danish rifle. Tell me what you think.

In addition to the info you obtain here, go to the Garand forum at [url]www.jouster.com[/url]. I've always found these guys informed and helpful.
I think the price difference reflects the average condition of the different class of rifle, with the Danish, on average, being a little more beat than the std grade.
FWIW, I'd spring for the std grade. If you happen to have any problems with your rifle (rare, but it happens) CMP will almost always bend over backwards to help you out.

Get the service grade U.S.G.I. $519.00 shipped. The Danish rifles are O.K. but they are a mix of U.S. Danish and Italian parts. You are also very likely to get a euro made stock = junk. The service grades that I have seen over the last year or so have been very nice rifles. I doubt you will be unhappy with what they send you.

I got a Garand through CMP 2yrs ago & what a blast it is to shoot.
It's fun to hear the clink of the clip after you've emptied a magazine. Mild recoil & a tons of fun. Not as cheap to shoot as a .223 though.

IF you like the M1 garand that's great. The are great for a collector's item and a target gun. If you want something greaat get and M1A. You get a bottom loading magazine and Cheaper .308 ammo. M1 Garands are nice though, and shoot darn good well!

Well, it's true that 7.62 NATO is cheaper than .30-'06, but on the other hand, the M1 owner can clip up 240 rds for about $10 in clips vs. $50 each for an M1A magazine, not to mention M1A 5-shot stripper clips at .50 each.
Maybe that Garand isn't such a bad deal dollar-wise after all.

Whether you go with a Dane or Standard Grade, its luck of the draw. Mine turned out nice IMO, except that the stock fit is loose. With the Dane at least you save $100.

Just a comment though, if you're into accuracy I'd stick with an AR. Quality accurate ammo is way cheaper for an AR15 than the M1, plus the AR is just plain more accurate - IMO. Still, the M1 is very fun to shoot and is my 2nd favorite rifle - guess who's #1?

I got 2 Danes plus a service grade. The Danes seem to have nicer barrels. The service grade had nicer wood, but if I was looking for one to accurize, I'd order a Dane. The Danes op rods were looser too. HMM - maybe order a Dane and a S.G. and swap barrels.

Never tried the Russian or Yugo stuff. I still have a couple cans left of the Greek that was floating around 2 years ago.

I bought mine in June and it's by far my favorite gun to shoot now. Get one now!

I put about 100rds of the Talon .30-06 through my M1 last weekend. Only had a problem with one round. Pulled the trigger - click, didn't fire. No matter how hard I pulled on the operating rod, I could not extract the round. So I pulled out the trigger group, reset the trigger and stuck it back in. Pulled the trigger, bang! Round went off just fine. No idea why it was stuck so bad, but that un-stuck it.

I know someone will tell me that that was a bad idea, and I agree with them. Don't let my lapse in judgement stop you. Get a Garand, now! [:)]

FYI, it looks like that Talon stuff is reloaded Lake City brass. All mine is stamped LC 67.

Mine is also DCM. Had mine rebarrelled to .308
and fitted a Fajen laminated stock. It is sweet as can be and does it draw attention at the range!!!

I've got a Dane - because I am a Dane, and I carried an M1 for a while in the Danish army.

My $.02 is that the Danes might be slightly more likely to be WWII receivers - since I think the bulk of them were given/sold to Denmark after the war. Mine is Aug '43, and has a '59 Beretta barrel.

BTW - If anyone has too many M1's and wants to sell me another one, email me. I'm itching to have another one.

One friend has a Dane, two have service grade. The service grades were nicer cosmetically but didn't shoot any better than the Dane. Can't go wrong with either IMHO. It's your money, spend how you wish.

Champion's choice uses a Douglas med. wt. match bbl, and installs it on your M1 for about $250. Your old bbl is returned. It's VERY accurate.

When I ordered my Garand, I figured if it were in bad shape, I would have the rifle refinished. When I got it from CMP (Springfield Armory May 1945) the furniture was banged up but the rest of the rifle looked brand new. I could not believe the craftsmanship. I put a new stock on it and shot it in the Garand match this year at Camp Perry. Definitely, a great deal. A must have.

Douglas barrels are top quality barrels. They've been making all kinds of barrels for many moons, and have an excellent rep.
