If you are talking about a wood/metal gap just forward of the receiver, it is because the 03/A3 stocks were designed to be used with rifles with the barrel mounted sights when it came time to mix and match parts.

It sounds like you got a great deal.

I got an A3 from the CMP a year ago.  All original Smith Corona, but the mix of blued and parkerized parts looks like HELL!  I understand the howls from the shooting press was pretty loud when they found what was being done to the old 1903.

No, Its the correct A3 upper handguard.  The gaps are to the rear of the receiver where the bolt from the trigger housing comes up.  The gaps to the rear of the trigger housing are smaller but sill noticable.  It looks almost like the channel is larger than it needs to be, not at all like the Mausers I've had in the past where the stock fit perfectly.
