Just got back from the SAO movie.
Click To View Spoiler 8:00 hits. LiSA comes up on screen and starts talking at the camera about the theme song she did and how good the movie is. That's about two minutes. Ok, fine. Whatever, kind of awkward. Movie time.
No. Screen goes black, then Haruka Tomatsu comes on. She talks for another two minutes about working on the series, and some of what we're going to see in the film. Also kind of awkward. Whole audience is looking at each other wondering what's going on, just show the movie already instead of talking about how awesome it is. Screen goes black. Yay, movie time, everyone thinks. NOPE. Yoshitsugo Matsuoka's turn to talk for three minutes. Whole theater groans. He starts flirting with spoiler territory and we all start to go WTFNO!!! This finally ends after he awkwardly tries three times to lead the audience in a cheer, and the movie finally starts. OK, the movie. The first half of the movie was pretty decent. I really like what they did with Kirito's character; he's out of his element in AR and it shows. There is a little bit of attention paid to Kirito and Asunas relationship, which was nice. At the very least, way better than the nothing we got in season 2. The end of the movie is where things go off the rails. I can't remember how many times I thought, "ok but why though?" The final fight is beautifully animated and directed, but it's the very definition of schlock. Everyone goes into VR for some reason, to fight the floor 100 boss from Aincrad (which it's not, actually. That's supposed to be Kayaba, in this fight its a 50-foot tall mummy-skeleton thing). Yui magics everyone their outfits and gear from Aincrad arc, and Sinon gets her shit from GGO for some reason too, even though Yui never had a reason to save it. At the same time, Leafa, the factions from ALO, and a bunch of random GGO guys show up to help, even though none of them had any way of knowing this fight was happening. Then Yuuki from the Mothers Rosario arc shows up in spirit to help Asuna, for litterally no other reason than she needed to be there to complete the ensemble. Everything is sacrificed in the name of fan service, and it's a damn shame. [/spoilers] I love the Aincrad arc. Hell I love the whole first season. It's got great characters and an infectious, adventurous quality to it that draws you in and makes you wish you were there. However, I think the narrative connections to Aincrad have been stretched beyond breaking at this point. I hope that Alicization either breaks new ground or finds some traction with it's Aincrad/SAO tie-in. |

Specifically on an app that is available on xbox. |

If people are eagerly anticipating SAO - the movie, is that a strong recommendation for watching SAO the anime episodes first?
I've been binge watching Log Horizon season 1 (after having started by watching most of Log Horizon season 2 - I think that Crunchyroll had season 2 up before season 1, which is why I started on season 2, but yeah, it's very confusing to do it in that order). Log Horizon is one of those 'game players get sucked into the game world' stories, as I gather so is SAO. It's just OK, but not great. If someone gave me a quarter for every scene where one of the players pushed his/her glasses back into place, I'd be rich - WTF is that all about? And the gaming references and strategy (HP and MP and whatnot) goes a bit overboard - like I'm really gonna be glued to the screen analyzing each player's skillz and stats and proficiency levels. |
|
|
Because they did so many of them, the only shows about being sucked into a fantasy world that are worth watching nowadays are the funny ones.

The Sword Art Online novels are better, though the author has a problem with not being able to write the story in chronological order. The anime is in chronological order, but some of the story material is missing. With the novels, you can either read the original Aincrad arc out of order, but in the order that it was published, or you can sit down with a list showing everything in chronological order and jump back and forth between a few volumes until you have completed the Aincrad arc. The later story arcs were published mostly in chronological order. |

I'm a few episodes into "Terror in Resonance" and it's really good. It kind of reminds me of a better Death Note where the police force is actually competent
It's made by Shinichiro Watanabe, so everyone is obligated to watch it. |

I just watched my first Anime series.
One Punch Man. Fucking fantastic. I can't wait for season 2 to come out. 100 pushups! 100 situps! And a 10km run! Every single day! |

Congratulations. Your post made so little sense I could simply delete most of it without losing the essence of it.

I'm enjoying Konosuba more than I expected.
Does the fact that I laugh out loud every time one of the giant toads tries to swallow Aqua (or one of the other female adventurers) with her legs flailing in the air make me a bad person? And the whole storyline with the explosion magic practice day after day after day against the 'unoccupied' castle that really pisses off the evil Devil's Army dude is borderline genius. Then again, I do have a juvenile streak to my sense of humor... |

So this thread is a little intimidating at 170 pages.
Local Walmart has ghost in the shell for 5 dollars. I think my only experience with anime is exmachina, the Animatrix, and the resident evil cartoons. I liked them. Is ghost in the shell any good? |

At 5 dollars you are probably safe.
I just rewatched Ghost in a Shell again in preparation for the LA movie. It had been 17 years since I last watched it. The 1995 movie focuses on the potential of consciousness and self-awareness of humans, cyborgs and AI while attempting to integrate action into the plot. My takeaway is that many transitions and parts of scenes were solely for the art, i.e. lingering camera shots on stills. Don't get me wrong, it was done pretty well, but at times it was distracting. Perspective on the above commentor. I finished Stand Alone Complex, only because of the Laughing Man plot continuity. The individual episodes I found frequently anticlimactic. I normally found that the episode was a speed bump in between the Tachikoma humor at the end. |
