Velocity is more a function of ammo than rifle. The velocity of standard .223 is pretty pedestrian by todays standards, about 3100-3200 feet per second with 55 grain bullets. My brothers .22-250 will run almost 4000fps with 40 grain bullets.
More powder+ lighter bullet= more speed is pretty much how it works. |

In addition to that, I believe the other determining factor is the length of the barrel.
If we are just talking about a "standard" M16, then I guess they all have 20" barrels. I do believe that the exit velocity of the same round out of a 16" barrel is lower, and out of a 24" barrel is higher. I'm sure someone here can direct us to some table or chart that lays this out - or maybe in one of the other, more technical forums, someone knows this off the top of their head. |
