I just LOVE B52's!!  There's nothing around that can haul so much stuff such a loooong distance. If we would just re-engine them and do some additional upgrades they'd be even better!!

If I recall correctly, the B1B has a higher payload.  Not to detract from the beauty of the B-52.  Planerench out

As a former member of SAC and the 22ndBW, that photo gave me a woody.

Planerench,

Good question. I'll have to check a couple of the feature reviews of these two in a couple back issues of World Airpower. The B1B may have the capability to lift more weight, however I think the 52 can haul a greater number of ordnance with the external pylons.  If memory serves me right the B1B is capable of having external carriage (it was tested) but that feature never went into service.

If the Air Force would follow through on re-engining proposals for the 52 it would significantly increase the range, offer better performance/reliability, increase efficiency & reduce costs. These birds would be even better IMHO. My opinions of course.

Methinks perhaps when President Bush was at Barksdale he autographed a few bombs?

Impressive, only hope there's are large enough target for the payload.

Isn't worth busting large rocks into smaller rocks.

Before I forget,

Here's a close-air support idea. Have the spec-ops locate occupied Taliban/Osama caves.  Plot the gps grid and send in the heavy bombers to cause massive landslides and seal the openings.

As a former member of SAC, too I would like to let all the AR-15.com members know -- the REAL SAC motto is:

"Peace is our profession, war is just a hobby."

What's that big guy in the middle on the trailer?

Those could be cruise missiles or big bad bang bangs. That is a turret type assembly analogous to the cylinder of a revolver. It fits into the bomb bay. Drop one, rotate the next one into position, drop drop drop...

If - when Travis is open to the public, there is a B-52 at the air musem there along with a lot of other really cool stuff.
