Trying to figure out how many people feel owning a gas mask is a worthwhile investment

I own one, I use it when i bug bomb our house couple times a year, fiance is allergic to fleas and they bite her like mad. 2 cats and 2 dogs = fleas. Also used when dealing with fumey chemicals, etc.  I find them quite versitile.

I have one but I've had it for a long time. Coincidentally, the little wifey and I were talking about this last night. She doesn't want one but she won't mind if I order some for her and the kids as long as I keep them out of sight in the garage. She doesn't want to scare the kids. I don't even know where I can find kids' gas masks. [:(]

Try EBAY.  I own 2 Canadian C4's, 1 M40 and 1 M17A2.  The Canadian C4's are the best masks, IMHO.

Like we'd answer that, just making profiling info available for you and whatever alpahbet agency you work for so you all can march door to door and confiscate our gas masks.[;D]

Can someone make an AFDB wearing smilie?

I ordered a pair of Advantage 1000 CS/CN Gas Masks by MSA (Mine Safety Appliances Co.). Cost about $145 each. After doing some research it was my understanding that the cheap surplus masks so readily available in surplus stores/magazines were more for display than functional use.

Bought my pair from Botach Tactical and had no problems with my order. Not sure how long the sealed filters are good for, though. But I did hear that 10+ year shelf life was realistic; possibly even 20. I'll have to call the manufacturer to make sure.

I have an M17A1 that I have owned for about 15 years now, I kind of aquired it. I also have a couple dozen extra filter sets. The wife and I just talked about it a couple nights ago, I need two more.

I know it probably won't help, but I admit it.  I bought gas masks for the family and a couple cases of filters.

i have a respirator that i use around the house/garage for all sorts of stuff...

pesticides, auto body painting, sanding fiberglass resin. there was one time i was flame cutting an old truck frame and the mask was perfect against the fumes from the smoking and burning rubber bushings.

also. i ordred up a micronel m95 for nbc reasons.

20 year shelf life. if i never need it, i'll be happy. if i do need it, i'll be happy.

I'm still looking into it.  Actually, I'm looking into getting a full MOPP Level 4 suit like the one here

Are you all walking around with these strapped to your leg, waiting for someone to yell, "Gas! Gas! Gas!"?
Or will you always wear your masks.

Think about it.

Chemical:
They won't have a plane flying over head spraying.
Maybe a truck will go by spraying?
I don't know, either way it would be too late.
There won't be huge contaminated areas to pass through. They just don't have that capability.

Bio:
You won't know until it's too late. If you're not infected, stay in your homes. Avoid subways, mass-transit, and large gatherings of people.

There's not going to be huge clouds of Chem or Bio drifting across the countryside.

Married guys, it DOES make the wife feel safe.

i have 2 israeli masks, one for me, one for my lady, with spare filters. ive had them for a couple of years, just in case some JBTerrorist tries to teargas the house (or halloween, whichever comes first).

www.tapco.com has kids' masks this week

Those Israeli masks are a worthwhile investment because they are inexpensive, but right now the prices are probably jacked up.  I bought 1 for y2k to have an extra, but like the USGI masks better.  I know that in a terrorist attack, by the time I feel sick it will be too late to put it on.  There may however be panic and crowd control situations were it could be useful.

Better to have one and not need it than need it and not have it.

My wife and I both have gas mask.

We got it about 2 years ago when we bought the house.  We use it quite often when we work around the house like painting enclosed area (closet, utility room, etc.) and when spraying chemicals.

Comes in handy on holloween too[:D]

We don't expect it to be used against some chemical or biological attack.

I have my old M17A1( geniune NBC filters). My wife and daughter don't have one so what good would it do for me to use one. Is everyone sure that they have the combat filters and not the training type that are only good for CS/CN?

"Is everyone sure that they have the combat filters and not the training type that are only good for CS/CN? "

"How does one tell the difference between training and real filters?"

There is no such thing as a "training" or a "combat" filter for the US MILITARY M17 (M13A2 filter: 42400-00-165-5026), M40 or M42 masks.  They are one in the same.  Among the many additional duties I had, I was an NBC OIC for 6 years.

Don't get taken by anyone trying to tell you there is a difference..there isn't!  We ordered the same NSN for training replacement and real world deployments with respect to each mask filter type.  The only requirement we had was to replace all filters in the unit with brand new ones before a major deployment.

Are these the C4s?  If so, would also like to put on the list for 'em and spare filters too.
