Anti-Attack Feds Push Carnivore
   By Declan McCullagh ([email protected])
   2:00 a.m. Sep. 12, 2001 PDT

WASHINGTON -- Federal police are reportedly increasing Internet
surveillance after Tuesday's deadly attacks on the World Trade Center
   and the Pentagon.

Just hours after three airplanes smashed into the buildings in what
some U.S. legislators have dubbed a second Pearl Harbor, FBI agents
began to visit Web-based, e-mail firms and network providers,
according to engineers at those companies who spoke on condition of
   anonymity.

An administrator at one major network service provider said that FBI
agents showed up at his workplace on Tuesday "with a couple of
Carnivores, requesting permission to place them in our core, along
with offers to actually pay for circuits and costs."

   [...]

Microsoft's Hotmail service has also been the target of increased
federal attention, according to an engineer who works there.

"Hotmail officials have been receiving calls from the San Francisco
FBI office since mid-(Tuesday) morning and are cooperating with their
expedited requests for information about a few specific accounts,"
the
person said. "Most of the account names start with the word 'Allah'
   and contain messages in Arabic."

Ya gots to admit. Ever the opportunist and quick to play(prey?) off an emotional crisis to take away more of our freedoms and invade our privacy.

They certainly seem prepared to react within a matter of hours as you stated. If only they could do that when and where it counts, we wouldn't be in this predicament to begin with. And that's the sad part of all this mess.

Peace... and I'm not just saying that.... I mean it.

That's what things like encryption are for.  My e-mails are encrypted, as are most of my other communications.  Hell, this board could be setup to support SSL/HTTPS and encrypt all that traffic as well, not that it would matter since it's a public message forum.

That's what things like D.I.R.T. and other automated security tools are for.  Encryption swiftly and silently becomes a self imposed sense of false security if your password, private key, etc are compromised.

Imbroglio should spend his time looking for a job instead of posting this drivel at a time like this.

I have been and this isn't "drivel". The net community has been fighting carnivore for over a year and now there will be people clamoring for it.

They sure as hell are not going to remove the installed carnivores after this whole affair is settled. More privacy and freedom will be sacrificed for "safety".

The more information your government keeps on file about you, the more information a potential enemy of your country might be able to discover about you if the database(s) fell into the wrong hands.  Just ask people who lived in territories occupied by the Nazis during WWII.
