The book advertises building an AR-15 in "either open or closed bolt..."

Open bolt?
How could it possibly be the same design?!! [>:/]

I think they are talking about the single-shot feeding, target rifle.  Not sure, cause I haven't seen one.  Maybe somebody has seen one.

I think you are talking about the M16 light machinegun upper?  It would work only as an open bolt on an M16 lower I believe.  On an semi AR it would function gust like a regular upper.
