Well, I'm looking into an AK type rifle. Yes, I have an AR already. Man these Vepr II rifles are pretty and have earned lots of praise I hear. Anybody have any experience with one? I'm interested in 7.62x39. Two concerns of mine are: the weight-9 pounds, how heavy is a "normal" AK? That seems heavy. 7.62x39 vs. .308-I always thought they were the same round...??? Like 5.56 and .223. What is the deal? please inform me. Thanks

7.62x39 is like a 30/30 .308 or 7.62x51 is like a 30/06 round I have a vepr II in 7.62x51 it's a bit front heavy but it is a nice rifle

So, I could go to Walmart and buy 30/30 ammo and shoot it in my Vepr?
Link Posted: 8/26/2001 6:04:15 PM EDT
no 7.62x39 is a mid range cartridge like the 30/30 and the .308 or 7.62x51 is a longer range cartridge like the 30/06.

7.62 is the calibre of the projectile fired from both rounds, the casings are different. 7.62x39 is the shorter cartridge. A 308 is 7.62x51 the slug is the same calibre, but the cartridge is longer, and more powerfull. no, you cant buy 30/30 ammo to shoot through your AK, or VEPR......7.62x39 can be had for cheaper anyway (well...I havent priced 30/30 ammo, but 7.62 is pretty cheap) edited to correct bonehead mistake stating that 308 was 7.62x54. [:E]

hey! buy it if the price is ok. the weight is about right for a .308, and robinson armament(the people that import it) is a super company.

The 7.62 NATO is 7.62X51. The only 7.62X54 is the soviet stuff, and don't try to feed that in a 7.62 NATO or .308 gun please. Sorry to harp on a technicallity, but that is a pretty important one.

Are you asking if the VEPR II can only take 10 round magazines? The .308 version of the VEPR II is the only one limited to 10 rounds magazines. The 7.62x39mm and .233 versions can both take hi-cap mags. I ordered a VEPR II in 7.62x39mm a while back. I'm hoping it will come in this week. Apparently, they are so popular that Robinson Armament is having a hard time supplying them. I'll be posting some pix of mine when it gets here. That is heavy for a "normal" AK. However, the VEPR II is not a "normal" AK. It has a reinforced RPK receiver and a chrome-lined heavy barrel which is much more accurate than a typical AK barrel. Great shooters. Nice stiff receivers and the fit and finish is not what you expect for a commie gun. Cheapest place to get them I have found I have found is Tennessee arms. http://www.tennesseeguns.com/firearms.html

The 7.62X39 actually make pretty good deer rounds. At medium to short range they are very effective. Just like the 30/30.

MP, if you are going to get one goto the site above. They are $499 for the 308 and about $10-20 less for the .223 and the 7.62. Thats the cheapest that I have found. Plus shipping and transfer, you'll have a VEPR II for less than $550 out the door. Cav arms has them listed at $570. Gunshow prices hover around that to a few dollars more. Good Lcuk!

I'm getting my VEPR II from Tennessee Guns. Including shipping, my total came to $513. For that quality of rifle, I find that to be an excellent price. Whoops, sorry.....I stand corrected, I incorrectly posted that a 308 round was 7.62x54....It IS 7.62x51. DAMN...I should know better (I have a 308)....but hey, it was after midnight on my night off when I posted that. [:D] BTW,...I'll edit my original post to correct it.

dont forget that soviet 7.62mm is slightly larger in diameter than us 7.62mm. if you reload you can not use us dies in 7.62mm. the vepr's use russian recievers. i wish Robinson arms would make one in 5.45mm with a 16 inch barrel.

VEPR II's in 5.45x39 are coming sometime in September. check it out at http://www.robarm.com You can send you VEPR to Kreb's customs and they can do work on it. ( ex. cut down barrel, add muzzle break, RPK stock set) of course you will pay a pretty penny, but worth it.

So unless you have the stock cut down aftermarket there is no other choice but the extra long?
