The urge has struck me for one of those DD type mortar goodies for recreational purposes - inert rounds only.  Except, since there is no such thing as a 'DD' in Canada, I understand that the only requirements which would apply to this are that I would have to register the thing as a firearm and possess a firearm acquisition license, which I have.  So, how does one make a mortar system?  Any suggestions for aiming adjustments, construction materials, firing mechanism etc?  I was hoping for something that would launch those stubby 16(?)oz disposable propane cylinders with some sort of a tail screwed onto them, propelled by 12 gauge blanks.  They banned lawn darts up here  so I have to find some sort of a substitute.  [8D]

Banned lawn darts?  Jesus, Canada really is socialist hell.

Are they going to ban Monopoly because it encourages capitalism? [:)]

Striker, are those the lawn darts w/collapsible shafts? How about the lugs for toothpicks?

Build a potato cannon or carrot cannon and tell the government it is your new garden fertilizer.

LOL Striker.  I shouldn't... the National Lawn Dart Enforcement Support Team might beat down my door searching for the alleged contraband.

rg00red, some of the more vocal Canadian antigunners were also the same group of safety Nazis that managed to ban lawn darts.  And three-wheeled ATVs for that matter.  Emile Therien and his Canadian Safety Council for example.

Striker:  Is that a pre-ban Canadian military issue chicken cannon?

if you are going to build a replica ,make
sure it is muzzle loaded. don't use a 12ga
shell to propell the round. lot of legality
to avoid. i used a 80mm base & bipod. built
the tube out of 1/4 inch thick walled hydraulic
tube. it launches campbell soup cans full of
concrete. lots of fun!

What the hell is a lawn dart?  I think I'm too young to had the opportunity to enjoy them, but if they're banned they must be fun as hell!

That's a possibility and would likely be quick and easy to build too.  How many reloads does a can survive and what kind of range/accuracy  do you get?

It would likely be the same paperwork up here whether it's 12 gauge or muzzleloader - both would have to be registered unless you were certain that it was an 'exact' reproduction of a pre-1898 'antique firearm' muzzleloading mortar and were willing to go to court to prove it. So says legal counsel for the Canadian Firearms Center.

What 'caliber' would a 12 gauge powered mortar be for registration purposes - 12 gauge or bore diameter?  Are there any unpaid uninsured volunteer collabo-- uh, verifiers who can be sued for their mistakes while acting in an official capacity who might care to take a stab at that one?

Edited cuz not all pre-98 blackpowder mortars qualify as antique firearms.

the cans survive only about twice, sometimes
only one. it's a semi tight fit in mine. when
the can gets deformed i don't risk using it
again. using a half a shot glass full of 2ff
powder at a 45 degree angle, the range is well
over a mile.

Think golf ball cannon and have a ball, cheap ammo, easy to locate ammo, load 1oz of 2ff for car penetration/ball explodes. Made mine out of a hydraulic cylinder ram.

A friend and I built a hellacious beer can mortar once from plans we bought at the gun show... he was a mech. engineering student and worked in a lab at school, so he had access to all kinds of raw materials.  He took a steel billet 1' long and about 12" around and bored it slightly bigger than a beer can, then drilled the sidewall for a fuse.  Then, we welded a 1" bar to the bottom of it so we could make a little carriage for it.  The load was as follows:

fill beer can with gravel
wrap can in several layers of duct tape
2 empty 12ga shells of Pyrodex in the tube
load can
insert fuse
light [pyro]
Giggle balls off at huge explosion and 600-1500 yard shot.

Later, we started making little charges of Pyrodex and tape and putting them in the front of the can.  We'd light the cannon fuse and the can fuse simultaneously and the can would blow up 4-600 yards downrange.

Tons o' fun.
