by Allan Ramsay
Some of the weapons found when armed police raided a south-east London gun
factory which was converting replica pistols into working firearms came
complete with cleaning rods and handy carrying cases.
Killing machines: the London gun factory was converting replica guns
Detective Inspector Clive Stevens, leading the SO19 operation, said: "This
was a major find and a real production line. The guns would have been sold
for between £500 and £800 to criminals prepared to kill."
"It is very rare to discover an operation like this and it could have been
arming a large number of criminals." A 42-year-old man was arrested when
officers burst into the yard in a Bermondsey culdesac advertised as a car
repair workshop.
One of two caravans on the premises had been used as a test-firing range.
Bullet holes were found in the walls and cushions. Police are still
hunting for the gunsmith who carried out the work converting the replicas.
