i have a Navy mkII with the insert. It's a hell of a shooter. I have shot both 06 and 7.62nato garands and prefer the 7.62. Everyone told me accuracy woundn't be as good. I have not found this to be true. Mine is every bit as accurate as a .06.

For what it's worth i am told the army had problems with the inserts coming loose. And dropped development. The navy suposedly used a different technique with the inserts. To my best knowledge there hasn't been any faliures in them. I am told there are no Army varients that ever hit the field or the market.

what they are refering to is a removable plastic insert that fits in front of the clip toward the chamber. It physically shortens the clip area so that 30.06 can't be loaded. The chamber insert is permanant if it's a navy rifle.
The magazine insert can easily be removed to allow .06 ammo to be used. But!! the rifle must be rebarrelled with a 30.06 chamber.

IIRC, the Navy attempted to use these chamber inserts in order to save money and be able to use the M1s on hand after the switchover to 7.62 Nato.  Ultimately, they discontinued its use due to unpredictable ejection of the insert, and began to rebarrel the rifles instead.  Also, a plastic/metal insert was supplied for use in the "magazine" area, to prohibit inadvertent use of .30-'06 rounds.  The Navy didn't convert too many M1s before adopting the M-14, so authentic NAVY re-barreled 7.62 Nato M1s fetch a considerably higher than usual price.  More info can be had at [url]www.jouster.com[/url]. Personally, I would not use the chamber insert on anything other than a bolt-action, and only on emergency basis at that.  I just don't trust the things.
