I heard on radio today that Bush has proposed granting 3 million Mexican illegals permanent resident status.

While I don't agree with this idealistically, I think it is a smart political move.  Mexican immigrants typically vote democratic because of government programs.  This move would win Bush and other Republicans 3 million votes in appreciation.

What do you think?

I think that Bush may very well lose more than 3 million conservative votes if he did that.

I think it is a ridiculous political move. They broke the law and should not get rewarded for it.

Why doesn't he just do an executive order repealing all of the gun laws and he can gain at least 4.5 million NRA member votes.

Don't think of it as allowing lawbreakers to stay, think of it as combating democrats and anti-gunners and you'll see what I mean by smart.

If he does it now, that will give conservatives time to forget by 2004.  But do you think those immigrants will forget?  I don't.

They're here anyways.  And they're the fastest growing ethnic group.

Remember who won California in the 2000 election?  And how many illegal immigrants do you think there are in CA?

See what I mean...

I thought I heard on Fox it was temporary worker status, like an H1-B. Is it now permanent resident status aka green card?

From this article, sounds like the temp thing like you say.  Won't waste bandwith cutting and pasting.

What makes you think they won't vote Democrat once they're legal (besides "appreciation").

It's not like many know the difference.  Besides, if it weren't for personal pride and ambition, I could live pretty well off the Socialists (Demo's) welfare ideals and never do another days work.

Just a thought.

"One proposal would allow payroll taxes to be deducted from their checks, but that money would not go to the U.S. Treasury. The deductions instead would go into a fund the workers could send back home to their families."

So will the president allow all U.S. citizens to have their taxes go directly to their families?  Or is this benefit just for those who illegally cross our border then decide to take advantage of our system.

So, If I apply for and am granted Mexican citizenship, shall I not worry about taxes here in the states?

"What is taking place is the policy of the Mexican government to dump its poor and its unemployed upon the U.S.," Buchanan told CNN. In the United States, he said, the immigrants "not only get jobs, but American taxpayers educate their children, provide welfare, provide Medicaid, and all the benefits of that, [and] they send their money back to Mexico.

So will this "tax break" we've been promised slowly get eaten away because of new commitments to those to are not even United States citizens?

Just as an experiment, someone should document the experience of sneaking into Mexico. You wouldn't see a lot of debate about housing, medical care, the trouble you have getting a driver's license or a checking account.

The federales and rurales would beat the sh!t out of you, steal everything of value you have on your person, then dump you in a gutter or river.

This whole debate is on such skewed, liberal-arranged grounds. They broke the law of the land to get here. We "amnestized" millions of "undocumented migrant workers" in 1986. Now here we are in 2001 talking about doing it again. It seems some of us are entirely unable to learn a damned thing from history, no matter how recent.

The problem with this plan is that it sets a precident.  If the Mexicans can get legalized, pretty soon the Cubans, and the Haitians are going to start jumping in their homemade boats and paddling towards our shores in the hopes that they can get the same deal.  Besides, what is to say that these illegals show any loyalty.  Once they're legal, they can do whatever they want.  They will vote for whoever offers them the most, and I don't want our two parties squandering away our resources to win a few votes.  Let mexicans go through the same legal immigration process that every other "legal" immigrant must go through.  We don't need to reward them because they've managed to avoid capture up til now.

I have a question, why doesn't the US government give out employment visas to the Mexicans?  They do a lot of low paying, bad jobs that Americans will not do.  Like picking produce and manual labor.  They send most of their money back to Mexico to help their families.  Give them a visa, tax the shit out of them and let them go home when they are done working.  Less risk crossing the border for them and Less money spent by us Guarding our swiss cheese borders.  There are many Hispanics in the US and they tend to be strong family and conservatively oriented.  The democrates think they are theirs but a little shove and hispanics will vote Republican.

The problem with all of this is that the illegals (work permit or not) know that if they can pop out a kid on U.S. soil the whole family gets to stay. Guess who picks up the hospital bills and pays for welfare?

You are absolutely right.  The illegals in CA costs them billions a year in healthcare alone. The citizenship laws obviously also need to be modified.

Imbrog,  For many years it's been an accepted practice for an American family ranching on the border to have a child on the Mexican side of the border.  Allows the purchase of property in Mexico, cattle ownership and just an easier time doing business in Mexico.  The big difference is American families don't expect a handout from Mexico, just an even break doing business, something the Mexican ruling class doesn't like.

You can't cultivate people that:

1. Don't speak or read the language
2. Send a majority of [s]thier[/s] my money out of the country.
3. That are on government subsistence.
4. That could give a shit less about our social system.

Nor do I, brother, nor do I.  But there is such a thing as 'the law.' And there is such a thing as 'getting in line.'

Even on schoolyards we were taught not to break in line.

Well, Mr. and Mrs. Illegal Immigrant, go home, come back legally, and get in line!

3.  All of them?  See # 2.
4.  What social system are you talking about?

The inner city urban system or the rural   hillbilly system?

Every time an illegal gets a job, a welfare mom gets her wings. (or walking papers) It is this realization that has brought us workfare.  If illegals can make a living, so can everyone else.

The problem is Welfare and other crap created by the Democrats. If Bush were to deny them welfare, he would lose millions of votes. If he gives them status, he gains millions of votes. He is vying for votes. He also terminated a law allowing Americans to sue Foreign (European) companies that have American property they got from Cuba and other Communist countries. Simple history: In the 60's Castro seized a shitload of American property in Cuba. We had been doing lots of buisness with Cuba under Batista. This property made its way into European hands and they want to keep it. Bush is cowtailing. OK, I'm usually a Bush supporter. He is semi-doing the right thing. He should give them work visas, let them pick fruit, and tax them like every other American. If he treated them like Americans then our treasury would expand. As in we get more money back. Solution: NO WELFARE, NO SOCIAL SECURITY, NO HANDOUTS. I don't care about them not speaking English. Speaking Spanish got my family better paying jobs in South Florida (Home of the Cubans.) I'm not sure about how much the Mexicans actually work. But, the Cubans here in Florida work and strive for their money. They pay taxes, they get an education (Have a higher literacy rate than America as a whole,) they don't take handouts. If anybody should be given amnesty it should be the Cubans. But, then again since Reno seized Elian, Bush has gotten almost every Cuban vote. The Cubans voted conservative even before then. But, their votes were more divided. Now they are united behind the Republicans. If Bush can bring the Mexicans to be like the Cubans, america will be a great place. Did I mention, the Cubans should have gotten amnesty first. God, I hope they don't give the haitians amnesty.

Here is my chart for deciding:

1) Person's Homeland's Government ? (Communist, Dictatorship, Semi-Democracy, Democracy)
2) Person's Education ? (Literate, Specialty)
3) Person's Ability to provide their own way ?
4) Person's Criminal Record ?

We should take those from Communist regimes first, since they need asylum the most. Those from Democracies should be rejected. Cuba is a Communist Dictatorship. Mexico used to be a semi-dictatorship. Haiti was a dictatorship until U.S. troops made it a Democracy. My point is Cubans, then Mexicans. But definitely not Haitians. NO ILLITERATES. If you can't read and write in any language, then you should be sent to the back of the line. Persons who speak and write English would be given priority. If you are gonna leech off of Welfare, go home. Cubans have families in America that provide their way. With the exception of 'LOS MARIELES', most Cubans are honest people. I understand that most Mexicans are also honest, but they have alot more criminals.

We have enough to worry about in this country besides finding jobs foe 3,000,000 more people - we have way to many jobless/homeless as it is. I am so sick of this F**KING crap! We need to take care of "our own" first. After that, we can go from there, and help others who want to become citizens.

The most important question is WITH WHAT COUNTRY WILL THESE "NEW CITIZENS" LOYALTIES LIE? They will never have to take citizenship courses on the U.S. Constitution or Bill of Rights like the immigrants who became legal citizens.
