AH-64D Apache
OH-58D Kiowa Warrior CH-47 Chinook UH-60 Blackhawk I'd do a poll if I knew how. The answer will surprise you. Merlin ETA: You guys at Boeing will already know this..... |
Apache 192 mph / 170 mph depending which site
Blackhawk, 184 mph / 170 mph depending which site CH-47, 150 mph / 184 mph depending which site you go to. OH-58D, 137 mph ETA: Geez, you hit up 10 sites and you get 10 different max air speeds for the helicopters. |
All slower than the westland lynx at 249 mph. But my WAG would be the UH60
USMC inventory, right now. No army. |
ah, right. |
That's a good one. One of my all time favorite movies (the first one, not the second one). Merlin |
Its the Chinook.
WHen its empty, it has the highest top speed... but not necessarily the fastest accelerating. |
I was gonna say the Loach....
But it appears they can only go about 175mph.... |
The Osprey is not being used by the Army, just the USAF and USMC. I'm going to say the Blackhawk is the fastest. |
My uncle is at Edwards as a senior avionics guy for boeing on the V22 project. It's definitely not a helicopter
Nor much of an airplane. |
Does the army fly 53's? Or does the AF do the heavy lift for them?
Well, no one said it was, with all due respect. |

CH-47
Besides I think there is a clue in the first post about "You guys at Boeing will already know this....." |
CH-47D Shinook. |
No and No. There's nothing the Army owns that it wants to bother lifting that can't be lifted by a CH-47. The CH-53 can lift more, but everything else the Army owns weighs more than either aircraft can actually lift. So the CH-47 can lift all the lighter stuff (like a 5-ton truck or a 155mm gun), and neither aircraft can lift the heaiver stuff (like an M-1 tank). The Army got rid of it's CH-54's in the 80's when it came out with the CH-47D. The "D" gave us enough lift power to pick up anything that was needed, and the CH-54's were getting old and expensive to support. On Special Ops missions, there is an advantage to using the CH-53 on some hops because it has a larger cabin space (same cross secton as a C-130). The USAF Special Ops Wing provides MH-53 support for SOCOM for such uses. Ross |

Before I read anything except the first post, I'm guessing CH-47. Based purely on ANdy's orgasms over it.
Yep, CH-47 Chinook, know this side of the Pond as the 'Wokka Wokka'… very fast, and flown from Royal Navy Carriers and Assault Ships in the Heavy Assault role… …something the US Navy has yet to master. ANdy |
Thats because we have the USMC....You know the smallest branch of the United States big four, that is still bigger than all of her majesty's finest combined? |
Hate to say it Andy, but I think you've been owned. |
Thay cannot operate Chinooks from their assault ships either! ANdy |
Don't think so… British Marines go to war in nice shiny new fast Chinnooks… US Marines go to war in old worn out slow CH-46's… You decide! Andy |

Shithook!!!!
They also have Rotor wash from hell, I had a squad leader who was using a Port-a-pottie when it got tipped over by the wash from a nearby Shithook. That's a no-shitter!!!!! |
Not used by the Army. The "T" is a USMC twin engine "J" with the TOW package from the Army's "Q". The Army only operated single engine Cobras. |
Yup, and it too is not used by the Army but only by the USMC. The Chinook is the fastest Army helicopter for now. It's also the best insturment platform (rotory-wing) that the Army operates. It's also the only one the Army has that can land in water by desgin. It's actually an easier aircraft to in-flight refuel than the CH-53, due to the shorter front rotor. They're one of the best out there. The Lynx is by far the fastest helicopter in any service. I'd like to see it offered for the LUH. A Lynx powered by two T800s would be my choice. |

CH-47 is the correct answer according to the Boeing News article (hence the "you guys at Boeing..." comment). I'll post the article tomorrow when I get to work, it contains links and such. Thanks, Merlin |

Here are some simple physics on why the Chinook is faster.
Rotor blades provide lift, but not equally. As the rotors swing forward on one side it creates more lift and when it swings back on the opposite side it creates less lift. These simple physics apply to any helicopter with a one rotor system. At high speeds, the helicopter becomes unstable and can roll to the side with less lift, LIMITING its top speed regardless of engine power. A Chinook has two rotors, each swinging the in a different direction (one clockwise and the other counter-clockwise), thus lift on each side of the helicopter is equalized allowing higher top speeds. |

Sea Stallions!!!!
Technical data is for HH-53C. Nation: USA Manufacturer: Sikorsky Aircraft Type: Assault Transport Helicopter Year: 1968 Engine: 2 General Electric T64-GE-7 turboshaft, 3,435 shp Rotor Diameter: 72 ft 3 in Fuselage Length: 67 ft 2 in Overall Length: 88 ft 3 in Height: 24 ft 11 in Empty Weight: 23,257 lb Max Takeoff Weight: 37,466 lb Max Speed: 196 mph Ceiling: 20,400 ft Range: 540 miles Crew: 3 Load/Armament: 38 troops |
I am sure you know this, but published data on military vehicles is never correct... maybe close but not correct. |
I'm sure we have someone on this board that flies Stallions. Surely, they know the topspeed. And your argument, makes me wonder why we would even bother with this thread in the first palce, since we'd all be wrong and correct at the same time. |
Well, that's what I mean. When I was stationed at Ft. Campbell working in Division, I knew a few rotorheads, and they would tell me a few stories... and many things are subjective. For example, if you took that helicopter into a dive and leveled out you can bet you will be exceeding the "top" speed. Also, even the military sources contradict each other. Recruiting fliers, Janes data, school taught capability and technical data, they all contradict each other. |

What sqaudron operates the Russian Helo's that are used in the US Forces?
They are 'in' our inventory? Some of those huge flying HINDS must be fast. |
I am very aware of this The list I found was about the closest I've seen I was a Naval Aircrewman in Sea Stallions for 18 months |
Used to love getting mail from you guys out of Sigonella. |

From Boeing IDS news from last week:
"On a standard day, the Chinook can reach airspeeds of 170 knots, or 196 miles per hour, compared to the AH-64D Apache (147 knots/169 miles per hour), the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior (125 knots/144 miles per hour) and the UH-60 Blackhawk (142 knots/163 miles per hour). The Boeing CH-47 Chinook is a twin-turbine, tandem-rotor, heavy-lift transport helicopter. Boeing in Philadelphia manufactures, modernizes and supports the Chinook for the United States Army, Army Reserve, National Guard and several international customers. The Chinook's principal U.S. Army mission is movement of troops, artillery, ammunition, fuel, water, barrier materials, supplies and equipment on the battlefield. Secondary missions include medical evacuation, aircraft recovery, fire fighting, parachute drops, heavy construction, civil development, disaster relief and search and rescue. In the U.S. Army National Guard and among international customers, Chinooks often devote most of their flight hours on these secondary missions. For more information: Chinook Info Apache Info Black Hawk Info Kiowa Info " Since Boeing makes 2 of the 4 choppers, I'd say they probably know what they're talking about. I don't since I'm in the big missile killer business side, just posting what I thought was a pretty interesting article. The poll on BNN had most people picking the Apache as the fastest Army Helicopter, as I did. Merlin |
Uhhh.. maybe because you can just ask anyone that flies 'em? You will be hard pressed to find anyone in Army aviation that questions the Shithook as the fastest helicopter. |

Yes Let's listen to what a contractor has to say regarding his/her product compared to the others... that's reliable... NOT!
USMC - when you need to crash an Osprey! Shit Smith Inc. has this to say regarding their Shit Rev 2, "Our shit is the Best! Poo Poo Inc, only comes in 2nd!" Poo Poo Inc, says "Our Doo Doo X-2 is better than Shit Rev 2" .Gov, "Neither product passes MIL-L-5H1TS, but since Doo Doo X-2 is lower in price, we're going to buy that" |
