Once, in about 1990 or '91. I was driving home on a Sun. afternoon, in the middle of nowhere. Minding my business, doing the speed limit (55 then) when I noticed a little Chevy S-10 flying up behind me as though it was going to rear-end me. I cut to the right to avoid being struck, but at the last moment he cut sharply into the left lane revealing another idiot behind him. That one tried to pass me on the right, but I had gone that way so he ended up out in the grass (4-lane interstate hwy.). That one nearly lost it, but regained control and took off, never to be seen again. The first one began to slow down until I caught up. I tried to pass on the left after signalling but he cut me off. I have no idea what provoked this, but suffice to say, he tried hard to run me off the road. I slowed down, speeded up, did everything to get away. I was driving a little Toyota 4X4 with a 4-popper engine, so NO power!! Finally, he got beside me and kept swerving over to push me off the road. He avoided contact as his truck looked nearly new. After several miles of this I remembered I had been squirrel hunting and had a 10/22 like Imbrog|io's behind the seat with a loaded mag in the console beside me. Out it came and I had taken quite enough of having my life threatened, so I rolled the window down, layed the rifle on the door frame, slapped the mag in, racked the bolt, hit the safety, and aimed at the passenger side window. The windows were tinted dark so I could only make out two young males (I think) in the truck. I made up my mind if he came after me one more time I would shoot out the window and take it from there. At this point he must have noticed the rifle because he just took off and I never have seen him again. I figured I would be stopped for brandishing, which is a felony in Illinois, but nothing more happened. If that had happened, I guarantee there would have been one red-faced very angry German to deal with. I hope the little prick learned that the next stranger you choose to mess with may be the wrong one. Needless to say, I learned to travel much more appropriately armed. [heavy]
