The modern day Law Enforcement Officer is an oft misperceived creature on firearms related internet forums. One faction perceives him to be a threat to the freedoms they hold dear, and resent him. Those freedoms are manifested in the physical sense by thier right to keep and bear. The other side holds him in a blindly high regard, because of his position. These people respect the power of the firearms themselves, and the associated control they can grant in certian situations. The LEO embodies this element to them. Sadly, this hyperbolus attitude often neglects to see the true "officer" who is somewhere in between. As our society drifts farther and farther into these corners of extremity, the LEO is forced to maintain an attitude that is fitting towards the public he works for. All of these problems can be alleviated with 3 simple steps, and I will propose them here. I am sorry I am doing this on your introduction post, but the idea just came to me, and I had a fresh screen to put it on. 1) Static measures of "proof" must be available in court for every charge levied by the officer. This includes cruiser video recordings of arrests (mainly as they relate to traffic stops that escalate), Breathalizers that once used, cannot be turned off, or reset-and are logged in at the station as the suspect is booked. Radar Guns that are fed directly into the Officers cruiser laptop, and a record of the recorded speed maintained- This allows no contention by all parties involved if "you were really going that fast". These tools, when implamented, would alleviate all doubt as to the integrity of the officer during the arrest; and would act as a catalyst to expose those officers engaging in dishonest detentions. 2) Full public disclosure of all investigations of officers for issues of corruption, or misuse of force issues. Sadly, certian municipalities conduct these meetings and hearings "behind closed doors" with only a handful of non-LEO "citizens" on the review panels. This is a bredding ground for dishonest practice, since there is no potential exposure of favoritism or cover-ups in these meetings at the high levels. Furthermore, a monthly greivence panel should be established so citizens with complaints against officers can have them citied into an official record. The validity of the complaints would be judged by 3 [red]ELECTED by POPULAR VOTE[/red] citizens. This "Office of Review" would allow for a centrifigulized record of all activity, thus making it very easy to spot misuse of power. 3) Citizen Ride along participation caried out by the same selection process as Jury duty. X amount of citizens would be selected from the repository of DMV info, and called to ride along for a day. All the laws governing Jury Duty would apply. This would allow for a broad, cross-section of people to be exposed to the Law Enforcement system first hand, and allow for first hand opinion to be formed. This would also force certian closed-door departments to air issues that they may not want to face, by citizen exposure on a day to day basis. To blindly trust all officers allows for those handful who are corrupt to seriously affect the lives of everyday citizens like you and me. If certian technologial controls were put in place, the good name of all the good, honest, and well meaning officers would be restored, and the corrupt ones ferreted out, and exposed. Welcome!
