Hands down " The hunt for red october " despite baldwin the movie rocks. Red dawn was fun , but not in the same league.

I still enjoy "Ice Station Zebra". And I'm holding hands with Jennifer about "Fail Safe". Also one of my favorites is "The Bedford Incident".

What about "The Day After"?!?!? I didn't see it myself, but I know it shook up a lot of people.
My favorite cold war movies are the triple S's: "Survivors," "Stripes," and "Spies Like Us." He he. "Hunt for Red October" was quite good despite Baldwin. |

The Abyss was good even though it was kinda touchy feely at the end. The FX were awesome and it was a good plot.
Number 2 would be Spies Like Us. HILARIOUS!!! |

How about "Threads" -- a shockingly realistic (technical consultation by nuclear scientists) nuclear war apocalyptical movie.
Scared the shit out of me -- we were given a copy during a NBC training course by [url]www.ASOD.org[/url] MUCH more graphic than "The Day After". |

Has to be Dr Strangelove, especially Slim Pickins riding the nuke to the target. Fail Safe does have a little special significance to me. The day in November of '78, when I had come home from Iceland, with orders for NORAD, I was watching Fail Safe at the same time I was reading in the paper about the (MAJOR) false alert they had earlier that morning. A month later, when I arrived, found out my roommate was one of the computer operators that day. Glad nobody mentioned War Games. That movie was a total joke. [whacko]

I like "By dawns early light" followed by "Red Dawn". Every 2nd ammendment lover should love "Red Dawn". You can tell it was written by someone who is very pro 2nd ammendment becuase they make a point a point in movie where one of the Cuban Officer (I think he is Cuban). Tells one of his men to go to the sporting goods store and get the copies of the 4473 form so they can round up the gun owners.

Good choices, all. They all bring back memories. How about "The Ipcress File" spy movie, starring Michael Caine? Or any of the series starring Alec Guinness such as "Smiley's People"?

How about World War III, where the Alaska National Guard fought the Russians who had invaded Alaska to destroy the Oil Pipeline. Not really a movie but a TV miniseries but still one of the best.

Just picked up the new, anamorphic release of Red Dawn on DVD for $10! Can't be beat. (The original release was not anamorphic, so the quality suffers on 16 x 9 TVs.)

Do you think the actors in Red Dawn knew the message they were sending out. Or do you think they were just so surprised that they were in a movie. Most of those kids it was the first major movies they were in.

Another vote for Dr. Strangelove (Yes, mien fuhrer,,,I mean Mr. President!). I'll also vote on Red Dawn as a second. There are a few memorable scenes in it. Like someone already pointed out with the officer telling the soldier to go get the 4473's. Also the seen with the soldier taking the pistol out of the dead guys hand, under the bumper sticker "You can have my gun after you pry it from my cold dead fingers."
Another one I liked, was 'Telefon' with Charles Bronson. It was about Russian trained agents that went on a predetermined suicide attack when they received a specific message (over the phone) that triggered a subconscious response. |

Back in the early 80's there was a movie that had the Russians planting nukes on oil fields. Some secret American agency had to figure out a way to keep the reds from detonating the nukes as it would decimate the oil production. In the end they got control of a ICBM and aimed it at Moscow. I wish I could remember the name of the movie...I think it was called "The Soldier". Does this ring any bells for anybody? I don't even remember if it was that great but I would like to see it again. I have to say I enjoyed Red Dawn and Hunt for Red October as well.
