The most powerful rifle cartridge I shot was a friend's Sako bolt action in .375 H&H.  It almost took my shoulder off.  It's a rifle that you don't find yourself doing a lot of plinking with.

As for pistol, I have a S&W 629 Classic in .44 Remington Magnum.  Not that bad of recoil until you start putting "hot" loads into in.

Honorable Mention in terms of recoil..  .357 magnum on a S&W J frame snubnose(Model 640).

460 Weatherby Magnum.  It had a muzzle brake so the recoil wasn't too bad.

pistol - 454 Casull.

Damn, I'm feeling kinda' wimpy over here.

With no military experience I never got to play with the really big stuff. [:(]

So the biggest for me was a Wheatherby MKV in .300 Wby. I loved it.

And a .44 mag S&W 29. Cool too.

The largest I have ever fired was when I owned a lathi anti tank rifle, it shoots 20mm shell and isn't something id like to experience on a regular basis, after it my 300 win mag was a breeze.

I got to shoot the fifty [:D] model 82.
I also got to shoot .458 win mag and it was nastier because there wasn't a muzzle break.

Pistols- .465 Linebaugh, you don't get better with practice.

M-203 40 mm was the biggest round. I was also assigned as a 90MM recoiless rifle gunner for about 9 months, never fired it though. Also fired a whole bunch of 7.62 out of various M-60 mg's.

My new .338 win. mag browning BAR, I can't shoot it more than a few times without crying like a little girl, My wife can shoot it all day long and she's only 120 lbs. soaking wet!!

As a side note 12 gauge slugs don't feel any different to me than trap loads so go figure.

The three most memorable experiences behind the gun have been:

1. Some "mystery" Winchester slug my buddy handed to me to try in my Beretta 1201FP.  THIS slug had a bit more "kick" than the others we were shooting.

2. My Remington 700 BDL-DM in .338 Win.Mag.; not as bad as everyone said it would be.  I'm hankering after a .375 H&H someday, for the "frontal area" and nostalgia, not to mention it's a classic that works.

3. A Remington 700 BDL in .300 Remington Ultra Mag.  This rifle had "lightning" type recoil, i.e., abrupt as hell.  Quick and hard.  Over before you knew it.  COOL.

It's a little different but as a child I accidentally shot both barrels at once on an old antique 8 Gauge. I didn't know this was possible and it knocked me out of the  small motorboat into the lake. My Dad and old curmudgeon friends laughed as I struggled to tread water and hold the shotgun over my head.

I had one heck of a bruise.

I got to shoot (actually pull the cord) on one round of 155mm canon... okay, okay it was a blank round that is fired at 6:00PM every day by the 8th Army.  Anybody who has been in Seoul before early 80's will know what I'm talking about.

ma duce--tripod and 5 ton ring (but never off the hummer ring, even when I was an MP)....

the Mk 19, all of 5 rounds, but what rounds they were......

The Stinger RMP dummy round, just the kicker motor and the seeker head is on the IFF. Its like a sewer pipe flying about 100 yards, cause the kicker motor is out before it gets past your face. Totally no recoil, the tube just gets light on your shoulder, and there is light and smoke...

Lots of M60E3, tripod, bipod, and standing, both hip and shoulder...

7 mil rem mag, lightweight

2 rounds of 50AE from a DE.

.375 H&H Winchester M70. This rifle had a superb recoil pad. Felt recoil wasn't bad at all.

12Ga 3" slug out of my Remington 870.
This really gets into your shoulder.

I once pulled both triggers at the same time on an old Italian shotgun (12ga).Lets just say I won't do that again. [xx(]

Most Poewrful Rifle? Serbu 50--Recoil was healthy, but the blast was the worst.

Most Powerful Handgun? MBAssociates 13MM Gyrojet Rocket Pistol. Just fired it today.
Damn near no recoil, damn near no noise, and the rockets on a full-burn generate more energy then a .454 Casull.

Worst Kicker>? A .475/120 Nitro.
An example of how bad this thing kicks...
A 30-06 generates 17# of free recoil.
The Nitro generated 116# exactly.
Like getting by a truck in the shoulder. Whatever bastard invented that thing needs to die.
