Does anyone know what type aircraft Sen. McCain was flying when he was shot down over Vietnam? The reason I ask,(and this probably sounds a little corny), is that I would like to send a nice picture of that aircraft to him and ask him for a personal autograph. No matter what you think of his politics, you have to give him credit for his service to this country.

Dunno, but I see a lot of pics of him around an A4 Skyhawk. Maybe that's it.

They in turn were attached to the USS Oriskany

On October 26 1967, A Douglas A-4E Skyhawk (BuNo. 149959) (Side Number AH 300) was shot down by a surface-to-air missile (SAM) during a combat mission over North Vietnam.
The pilot Lieutenant Commander John S. McCain III, successfully ejected and was made Prisoner of War.

Here is a shot of an A-4E, 149656 at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fl.
