A 12 year old boy with his dad were at the bench next to me when I arrived. We were the only ones there that early. I asked the young man if the gun he was shooting was one of the Yugo M48's thats been offered on the market lately. He said "yes sir" and started in telling me of the history of the weapon. I told him it was very nice and I had never shot one. He told me he had mowed alot of yards to get it and I could shoot it if I wanted. He then got up picked up the rifle and kept it pointed down range and opened the bolt and held it out to me as if I were doing a inspection. You could see the pride in his eyes ( and in dad's too). I took a couple of shots and then handed him a 10 spot and told him thanks for the experience. His dad told me it wasn't necessary to give him money. I winked at him and told him it was for more ammo and keep up the good work. It's still a thrill to meet one thats brought up right![:O]

That's what it's all about. Showing the next generation how to be respectful and responsible with firearms.

That kid will be an advocate for all the right things with an up bringing like that.

I just love those stories!
Good kids on the range....

If you ask me, this country should round up everyones children, and give them a good [spank]

Kids like this are the exception. Mowed lawns to buy his Mauser... AWESOME!

JonnieGTyler,

Now that I think about it, and from some of the post here, yeah, your right.  You do see both extremes at the range.  I distinctly remember the range officer at Atterbury in In. telling me of some idiot shooting a cast iron bath tub on the 25 yard range.   That brought down a shitload of rules and almost closed the range!

That kid's instructions began long before that day at the range! He was polite, respectful, fully up on the history of that rifle ( the reason it was stockpiled!)and a good shot with it too! It was thumping him pretty good but he was enjoying every minute of it! Yes, the L1A1 shot like a house afire so now I have to start stockpiling even more Ammo! [:D]

Matt--

That's because they can have 'em and then surrender them to the state.

Whereas, most decent folk like to actually raise their young ones and teach them right from wrong and to give respect to those who deserve it.

I just took my 8 year old nephew and his dad out to the range last week to shoot his new Romanian .22.
He was just aces on safety and was outshooting everyone by the end of the day.

Recruit all you can and teach safety and responsibility.

It's a shame that's an unusual event today. Good for that kid and his dad. Nice of you to slip the kid a few bucks for ammo.

I bought my first shotgun with my lawn mowing money when I was ten. It was a single shot 20 gauge Beretta. Weighed 4.5 pounds and kicked like a mule with high base shells. My shoulder is still sore from that gun.

Here's my 12 YO and his Pre-ban Bushmaster (with Dads Trijicon on it)  We spent all day yesterday at the range.  It was .22LR day (once a month) and we break out all the .22's we own and got to town.  We shot more than 500 rounds Sunday, along with little brother (9) who is killer with a S&W model 18 revolver!

He can use ammo money! [;)] He'll let you shoot it also! (Just kidding, and I think it's great to take the kids to the range.

Ahh yes, but unfortunately, "we"(i'm only several years older than they are) are the exception. Most kids my age, and by what I can tell, the majority of those younger don't give a crap about firearms or this country. For the most part, the only kids who have any "interest" in weapons are the 'gang-bangers in training.' I pity this country and this world when my peers become the majority in this country....
Most of the kids have been so brainwashed by the liberal media [-!-!-]  and "our" sheeple parents that all they can do when asked about guns is spout off some socialist rhetoric.  And when/if the SHTF, they'll be too scared and into themselves that they won't put up a fight, either through peaceful means or otherwise, and then later wonder how all of a sudden their freedoms are gone...
Well, anyway, time will tell [:(!]

BTW--can anyone give some tips on firing techniques that could be used by a fairly tall but light person? It might just've been my stance or the muzzlebrake on the AR-15 I used(it's disconcerting to have hot gasses go a couple inches away from your cheeks), but I could barely print a 5MOA group at 100yds with A1 iron-sights [>:/] .  I wanted to put a decent scope on it, but I'm not putting some Chi-com slave-labor junk on it, nor will I put a $300 dollar one on unless I can get alot better accuracy with the irons....

My brother is one of those strange in-betweeners.  He asked me to do Rifle Shooting merit badge with him (since he always did the high-adventure stuff at Scout camp and never had time to sit down and do the badge), so I obliged and took him to the range two weeks ago.  Of course, he loved shooting my Rem 597, my GF's dad's Ar15 and blasting some clays with our shotguns.  The next week, he kept badgering me asking when we were going to the range next, so I told him that when he turns 18 (2 months), he'll have to buy his own gun if he wants to shoot with us, but we'll take him to the range in the meantime.  His response? 'Hell no, I'm not buying a damn gun, I'm not a nut.' and 5 minutes later he started asking when we were going to the range next.

What a strange child... [rolleyes]

Stories like these almost make me want a kid or two of my own.  Almost.

It's too bad my nephews are out in CA, but they're still a little young so it's just as well.  In a few years though...
