Anyone have either of these guns in this caliber? Which gun is better built? How does the 454 Casull compare to that new 480 Ruger cartridge ?

There was an article about this in the Feb. 2001 American Rifleman. Ballistically, the 480 Ruger fits between the 44 mag and 454 Casull/475 Linebaugh. They mentioned 1329 fps and 1276 lbs energy using Hornady 325 gr. XTP mag. There's way too much to print, but I got the gist the 480 is easier to shoot. 480 recoil is on par with the 44 mag, but gives you a slight edge over 44 mag factory loads in terms of performance.

If were talking purely which frame is stronger for the .454? I'd have to say the ruger. There was a smih in Guns & Ammo that ONLY uses ruger frames to make his .500 Magnum hybrids. He was saying that S&W frames don't hold a candle to the rugers heavy duty frame. He did however have no mention of the R.Bull. .454 vs .480? I'd take the Casull over it anyday.

I have a friend who bought the Taurus, and something broke in the locking system for the cylinder after fewer than 200 rounds.  He had to send it back to Taurus with ammo still in the cylinder-with a large note to that effect!  Taurus did fix it, but I still think the Ruger would be stronger.  I got a chance to shoot the new .480 last week and it is a good bit more than a .44 mag. but not as much as the .454.  I have also shot the Freedom Arms .454 and although it is a lot more money, I like it more than any of the others.  I don't own any of these because the recoil is more than I want on a regular basis and my .44 is plenty for deer.

5 SHOT VS 6 SHOT,  PORTED VS NOT
WE HAVE SOLD BOTH AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY COMPLAINTS ON EITHER.  FORD OR CHEVY?

Get the Ruger, they have a long tradition of over engineering their guns.
But beware, I can usually only shoot two cylinders per day.
