I'd like to hear any responses as well.  I was looking at the .44 mag upper on the website earlier today. Anyone try one of these?  Thoughts, opinions?

I've got one of Tony's very first .44 Mag uppers.  It's quite something.  I specified an 18.5" barrel with an A2 upper.  Tested it at 50 yards and accuracy was very impressive.  Five rounds of Win. 240gr. JHP's grouped about an inch.  A short range 3x scope would really do it justice.  It's a beauty.  I selected the .44 Mag because I'm already set up to load it.

Mags are made by modifying an AR 20 rounder and then stuffing a Desert Eagle 8 round mag into it.

Hi-cap 44 Desert Eagle mags?  I haven't heard of any but I'd be all over them if they exist.  Eight rounds of .44 Magnums simply aren't enough.

I chose the .44 Mag because I've already got a Dan Wesson and it makes a good handgun/carbine combo.  Some of the other calibers look real interesting but semi custom dies and brass can get pretty expensive (not to mention .458 bullets!).  Velocity for a 240gr. JHP were running about 1700 fps from an 18.5" barrel.  That's pretty good deer taking potential.

I don't know if you want my opinion or not, but I'll give you the low down on each caliber.  The 44 Mag is by far the most difficult to get to operate and even then, it will not digest every type of ammo 100% of the time.  It is the most ammo sensitive as far as bullet profile of all the Tromix Sledgehammers.  If you want a gun that runs 100% of the time, don't buy a Tromix 44 Magnum.  This is primarily attributable to the fact the DE magazine changes feed angle as it unloads.  The 440 CorBon is the speedster of the bunch and is the flatest shooting.  Since you can get bullets as light as 165gr, it flat out, hauls ass for a big bullet.  It will launch 180's at 2400fps.  Reliabilty is very good.  The 50AE can sometimes be a chalenge to get to feed, but when set up right, it will run all day long and accuracy is very good for such a short fat bullet.  I still believe the .458 SOCOM is a better cartridge than any of the others, primarily because it is the appropriate length for the magazine and the rim is further rebated to '06 size.  This gives you much greater bolt strength and the bottle neck feeds better than the short blunt 50AE.  Its got more power than any of the others, but since bullet weight on the low end is limited to 250 grains, the 440 still wins the velocity race.

I personally would choose a 458 SOCOM ultra-lite with a 14" barrel and a 2" comp set up with a 1.5x5 Leupold myself.  No one has yet to ever order this configuration however.

Thanks Tony, I recieved an e-mail about the 50AE upper from you the other day but I forgot to ask for more in detail about it. And did want to bother you with more e-mails.

Have both the 50ae and the 458 SOCOM. Don't plan on doing a lot of shooting, because after about 30+ rounds you might be scraping up your shoulder. Or if that doesn't happen your shoulder will be nice and tenderized but the butt pad. But, yeah they are a hell of an upper.

I'll let you know how I like my .458 upper tomorrow! It will be here ups on Friday. Of course, this happens to be the weekend I have N.G. Drill (always something), so I have to meet the ups truck in the afternoon, then drive like heck to the range before they close to try the upper out. My wife will be wondering why my quick trip to OSH took 4 hours....
