in this country, if, by chance we went to war with China, would it be necessary to intern the Chinese population. Just like we did to the Japanese during WWII. Conspiracy folk lore says there are camps in existence right now. Could they be for residents of chinese decent. How would the average American feel toward their asain neighbor in the event we were engaged in prolonged conventional warfare with the chinese. How would we feel about being under martial law while this "rounding up" of chinese were taking place. How would you except the logic, if there was any, about internment? Would you help the gov't or would you hide chinese friends?

China sucks. I say we nuke it to take care of the population problem.

And re-nuke Japan while were at it.

I think we would have to take some of them out of the general population. There are many Chinese here that call the US home and would defend it with their own life if the need arised. Then there are others that simply live/work here and may even have citizen status but their true patriotism lies with their home country and they would try to destroy this country from within should we go to war and they had the chance. I work with several foreigners and I feel that there are several of each within the group I know. Now is the hard part, how do you seperate the dangerous foreigners from those that arent? I dont have an answer to that. I dont think anybody does. Something would need to be done to protect our national interests against possible terrorist attacks from our own citizens. Some innocent people would probably be wronged in the interest of the masses. I guess when you make an omlet you have to break a few eggs. Michael

Any foreign born or recent descendent of a foreign born person who is a citizen of the USA who doesn't consider themselves an American, wants to largely hold on to the language or culture and sypathize with the plight of the old nation they fled, or has that dual citizenship hyphenated American thing going. Whether it be we're warring with their native land or not, doesn't belong here in the first place and should be asked kindly to leave. If a person with oriental physical features here who if asked "what nationality are you?" says chinese they're in trouble and a representative of the enemy. If they say American then they are as much a potential patriot and American as you or I. somehow I doubt any Americans of chinese descent are going to side with chi-coms.

I am proud to be an incorrigible American, even though it does me no good. The NWO/UN course this country is on, no one will be able to voice an opinion let alone intern someone, it's almost that way now. I imagine we have already signed a treaty with the UN that would not allow the interning a group. What politician in this country would have the balls to ask for such a thing? It's not your country any more comrade.

Well while were at it, we might as well send the black into camps just in case those warlords in Africa think about invading us. Oh and round up all the neo Nazi's so that Germany won't get any ideas. How bout the Filipino's? Yeah we should get those bastards too for kicking the US military of their lands, boy the odacity of that country. Oh wait what about the Cubans, certainly Castro is planning something. Oh lets not for get the Mexicans, they're slowly infiltrating us an getting all the good jobs like house cleaning and picking lettuce. Why just yesterday, I wanted to kick this little Mexican ass for having a job I would've had selling oranges at the side of the fwy. You know cause I went to college for that and I'm unemployed. The nerve of that guy to come here. Let's not forget the towel heads certainly they're up to something. I say we institute a bill to open a hunting season for them. OH yes and the Japanese...How dare they mess with our currency and make better electronic and automotive products. Who better deserves a nuking than them. Oh lets get rid of the white trash too. They give the US a bad name. Hey what if they're all in it to take down the US. Well shit we might as well nuke ourselves. Its a conspiracy everyone is out to get us. get your guns the S is about to HTF. Yeah I say a pre-emptive strike on all these f*ckers. That'll teach. Screw political and industrial sanctions. Screw negotiations. Round em up get em out, nuke em. Yeah that's the answer.

Chaz is right. I didn't ask this question in a racist way. It was all about a situation of extended conventional warfare with china. Would the call for internment come from your average citizen or would it come from politicans or not at all. It is a very real possibility. Read the question and respond to IT. If your going to respond to replies, be more clear.

I would hope that the government would not re4sort to these types of measures. During World War Two there were alot of racial baises and assumptions that people of Japaneese ancestry would somehow be "loyal" to Japan. Many of these people had been here for a few generations and had no ties to Japan. I could not and would not support the detainment of any group of people because of their race or land of birth.

I will never say that the internment of Japanese-AMERICANS was a justified act. The government took US CITIZENS and placed them in concentration camps. I have been fortunate enough to know several people that were either lived or were born while in Camp, and they still to this day comment bitterly about the experience. And Chaz, i respect your attempt to 'find a place' for minorities in the next war. However, the Japanese-AMERICAN soldiers in the 442nd did quite well in WWII, being the most highly decorated fighting unit in US military history. All without filling the "special role" as spy, or terrorist that you suggest. Should there be a China-American conflict, be it tomorrow or 50 years from now, the Chinese here have BEEN here for generations. Many 4th or 5th generation citizens don't even speak the language, nor have they ever been to China. Unfortunately, I think Imbroglio is right. As to EricM's comments, i find it sad that you find that anyone with a "dual citizenship hyphenated American thing going" "should be asked kindly to leave." Too bad others are not so assuming about my American status. Occasionally, people ask me "where are you from". I respond "Nevada." And of course, they follow up with "No, where are you FROM ORIGINALLY?" Too bad others can't be as American as you.

Today, we cannot ignore Asian-Americans . According to the Washington Post, "Although Asian-Americans make up only 2.4 percent of the nation's population, they constitute 17.1 percent of the undergraduates at Harvard, 18 percent at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and 27.3 percent of the University of California at Berkeley. At the University of California at Irvine, a staggering 35.1 percent of the undergraduates are Asian-Americans, but the proportion in the freshman class is even higher:#41 percent. The Asians' hard work springs from their common heritage of Confucianism, the philosophy of the 5th-century B.C. Chinese sage who taught the man can be perfected only through education and practice. Confucius is not just some character out of the past, he is an everyday reality to these people." Confucius said:" man is born equal, and there should be no discrimination in education," but without effort nobody can reach goal. R. MacFarquhar is too sensitive about the Asians when he says that for 200 years since the onset of the industrial revolution, the West has dominated the world, but now that dominance is threatened, in particular by the East Asian heirs to Confucianism who so far have provided the only real economic, political, and military challenge. These people are not your enemy. Do not confuse the people with their government. just my 0.02 Ron

Do we let them (chinese, japanese, blacks, mexicans, germans ect.) stay here only when it suits us and our needs. Did'nt we as americans learn from past mistakes? Thought we as americans or people that live here in "Free" america were innocent untill proven guilty? I hate to say it but their are people out there, some in high places that will judge people on looks or race and not their actions. Sure they'll be camps.

Hey, lets get one thing straight. Chicoms suck, Chinese people do not - generally. As an American of chinese descent, I'm really offended by the suggestions for detainment of Chinese, especially as if WWIII broke out, you'd probably find me in a BDU, clutching a rifle and shooting the ****s. [Edited cause Im in a good mood. Please watch the language used, especially in a topic like this where anger can alter your words. - GB] That said, I myself fear what chicom infiltrators or sympathizers could do. The sentiment of many native chinese - i.e. those raised in China(I could even technically count myself in this category - came to the states when I was five) - my parents, their friends, and the chinese community in general, don't give a rat's ass about freedom. As John Derbyshire pointed out in a NR article a few weeks back, they're strongly nationalistic and would much prefer power to freedom. I don't know what the solution should be. Maybe prevent first or second generation emigrants from working in sensitive positions - which I fully realize includes removing me from any possibility of serving as as govt contractor(well, my handle says it, I'm a comp geek) or as an intel specialist - but hey, that's a price I really wouldn't mind paying. And Nomad, I've been there - well, Shanghai, not Beijing. It does suck. They've made it a model capitalist city, but try living there for a while and all the freedoms you take for granted are worthless.

Most of the donors to my genetic makeup were from Sweden and Denmark and weren't here until the 1940s. I claim no allegiance to any nordic country, and am just as much an American as any great great...grandson of Samuel Adams and am just as much an American as one who migrated from China last week. Your American status? You either are or you aren't and if you aren't I'd hope you're only here on vacation or for your job.It doesn't matter where you're from or what you look like so long as you're one of us, and if you're not refer back to that statement I made earlier that incensed you so, we ask not your counsels or your arms. This will be an underlying cause for future internment. Just as happened in 1942, there was much jealousy of the "slant eyes" owning so much farmland on the west coast that internment was a good reason to get them off of the land. As the internees were desperate to sell their property or lose it all, it could be bought up for a fraction of the actual cost. Just think now if war with China happens as the economy continues to tank. All of you asian enemies in high paying corporate jobs will immediately be subject to suspicion and employment termination since it would be the "patriotic" thing to do. And look at how many more applicants would be accepted at the major universities if a major part of the "emeny population" were interned "for their own protection". Yup it will never happen again.

It's fascinating to find that a few people who are perhaps worried/concerned that some day gun owners might be rounded up and put in concentration camps are perfectly fine with the concept of "interning" certain Americans simply because of their ethnic heritage. And the justification is apparently National Security, correct? Your guns are a threat to National Security. Remember that the next time you support something "in the interest of National Security"! Every gun owner in America is a potential terrorist! I do not deny this - I EMBRACE it. This is what keeps America FREE. Not some FEMA employed Oliver North wannabe with plans for martial law and "internment camps." I an first and foremost a FREE MAN, and then, and only then, an American. I condemn the very IDEA of imprisonment or persecution of any honest citizen whether on the basis of his religion, race, et cetera. Free men of all colors are welcome in my foxhole.

As a half-breed Chinese-German-Italian-Dutch-God-only-knows-what, I haven't seen much evidence of bigotry on this post, it's just a tough and uncomfortable question. Like it or not, I would be more concerned of a Chinese looking American (such as myself) spying for China than I would be of an Anglo spying for China. That doesn't mean that I have any intention of going quietly to an internment camp, though. What I am thinking is that China is not going to be a credible threat to American soil for a while, maybe forever. I am no expert on China, but it seems like the government there is going to have one hell of a time controlling the internal affairs of the country let alone projecting military power sufficient to support an invasion. They seem a very proud and possibly arrogant people (sounds like Americans a little,) so I do get frightened when China starts beating the drum of nationalism. Give 'em some more doses of Brittany Spears and all that other crap I say. Let them pirate intellectual property and get exposed to American culture. We'll see how they deal with options and possibility and freedom. Subversion and incorporation is a better alternative to conflict. I do hope G. W. Bush adopts a more flexible approach to the Chinese, and keeps a strong relationship between both countries. I am not a big fan of Mainland China, but they are there, and we have to work with them. If it comes down to bullets, I'll be fighting for Americans. It's my culture, and I like it.
Link Posted: 6/11/2001 2:23:50 PM EDT
Let's see, 2.5% of the total (280million)population is Asian. Maybe, at the most, 1/3 of that total population is Chinese, and out of that number maybe 1/4 are actually from the mainland or have direct family ties to the Chicoms. The rest are from the democratic nations of Taiwan/Hong Kong. That leaves an incredibly small number of Chinese with ties to Chicoms. Where do you get the notion of this " Large Population of Chinese" from? It sounds like "liberal" math to me. Most of my Chinese/Taiwanese friends are total hard core capitalists. They'd rather be "dead than red".

I don't know why everyone is so upset with their thoughts about "When they come" It is logistically impossible for the Chinese to put enought people on American soil in a short time time frame to be called an "Invasion" The Chinese do not want our land, they want our $$$$$. What good would it do to destroy what they covet by invading this land. They need our $$ to build their country, to develop their infrastructure. Like the Japanese did after WWII, those goods were cheaply made too but look at their quality now. The people in China have no way of knowing what the outside world looks like but when they do, they too will demand a better lifestyle. Already the Chinese are the fastest growing group of millionaires, they don't need to steal it, they will make it on their own. They are becoming a consumer for all the things we take for granted. They need us for we will help them get what they want. Ron
