Get the Ruger MKII 5 1/2 inch bull-barreled, blued model. Has fully adjustable rear sight;unless you want a fixed sight model?

I've had them or shot them all. There are three choices: Ruger Mk II, Ruger Mk II or the Ruger Mk II.
More gun for the dollar by a mile. (What is a "Ruger Luger", BTW?) |

Let's leave the S & W guns out for now (unless you get a used gun).
I am partial to Rugers. Get a Government Slab Side with the notches cut on top for a scope, and you will do quite well. Their basic and bull barrel models are very nice. I have no experience with the Mark II /.45 model, but it is a good concept--same grip angle as a .45 and with a push button mag release. I understand the Brownings are just as good, but if I had the money to spend, I'd get either the slab side or the .45 model (in stainless). I have a bull bbl blued Mark 2 and a standard barrel Mark 2. AFARR |

I have a Ruger MkII Target and a Browning Buckmark Varmint.
Out of the box the Browning is head and shoulders a better pistol - easy to clean, sweet adjustable trigger and very accurate. Its ten inch bull barrel has a weaver rail along its lenght which makes mounting a scope easy. Recently Volquartsen is making replacement carbon fiber barrels for this guy. The pistol and scope combination make this thing a can't miss pistol. The Ruger has more third party parts available. It comes in about ten diffent configurations where the Browning comes in 3 or 4 now. I've bought the scope mounting rail for the Ruger but haven't put it to use yet. I got replacement Hogue grips which are nice. I replaced the fire control parts with Volquartsen's accuracy kit. The pistol is still a pain in the butt to take apart - more accurately to reassemble after taking apart. The Ruger is more fun to tinker with and improve, the Browning is better out of the box. |

i have a ruger 22/45 with the 4" barrell. It's a great little pistol. Accurate to 50 yrds with standard ammo and very tough. Only major drawback is it is a royal pain in the a&* to fully strip and clean. I only strip it down about every 1500 rnds or so.

5 1/2 barrel Ruger - drop the crack pipe, pick up your little Ruger and bring your check book.

It included a target trigger, target hammer, sear, trigger rebound spring, and mainspring. It also has Hogue grips. My old man has a Rugar MkII with a 10" bull barrel. Its the most accurate .22 pistol I have ever fired. Never had a problem with it either. The only drawback is that it IS a real pain to strip and reassemble...

I was in the same boat back in January. After looking at the Browning and Ruger I ended up with a stainless Ruger MK II competition target slabside. It came with a scope base and rings which I used to mount a 1" Ultradot red dot scope. This is probably the best purchase I've made firearms wise. EXTREMELY accurate, major fun, and cheap to shoot.

the browning buckmark is an accurate little pistol.It has a good trigger out of the box and feels more natural in your hand.Mag release is on frame(Ruger's is on bottom).Buckmark also has better sights. my .02$[uzi][heavy][pyro][pistol]

I have both the Ruger 678 slabslide and the Browning Buckmark Bullseye and while the Ruger does shoot real nice it just cant match the Bullseye. The Browning has an adjustable trigger and sites and the fluted barrel just makes it a realy nice looking pistol as well as a great shooting pistol. It does cost a little more but in my opinion its well worth it!

Ill also go with tep0583 on that the Ruger is a total pain in the a$$ to clean, the Browning is much,much easier to take down and clean!

What about a Taurus Model 94, 9 shot with a 4" bbl? I'm not suggesting it, I'm asking if anybody has had any experience with them.

I have a Browning Buckmark plus and it is a great pistol. I have put probably 5000 rds through it and it will still shoot better groups than I can. I would HIGHLY recomend it.

Gonna have to agree with the others, the Ruger is nice but I prefer the Browning. If you want a great old .22 look for a High Standard (people are starting to realize their value lately, so finding a good deal is getting harder).
JT BTW, anyone use a conversion kit on their AR? |

personaly i would suggest the browning 5.5 gold or field target its a whickedly accurate, (ive won 22 bulleye matches with mine) well built and balanced 22 pistol that dosent have that damm mk2 heel magazine release and weigh a ton like th slab side.

I've got an old .22 high-standard model h-d military. Nice gun, accurate, with a good balance for my hand. Not sure what the cost of one would be, though, this one's been in the family.

Browning Buckmark Camper or any Buckmark. Ruger MkII. Stay away from S&W S/A target pistols, they've had problems.

I have a standard Browning Buckmark that I bought used. The only upgrade it had was a set of after-market sights. I find it to be extremely accurate and comfortable to hold.
I compared it to a friends Ruger Mk II after I bought it. They had comprable barrel lengths, but mine was considerably lighter. I don't like the grip angle on the Rugers either. It reminds me too much of a Glock. If you are into Glocks then it would be an ideal practice pistol, but I personally find it not to be a natural fit. Another answer to this could also be the Ruger 22/45, which was not on the market when I bought mine or it might have been an option. Try out all three and just try to find out which one fits your preferences. As far as reliability and accuracy are concerned, I don't think you would go wrong with either of the Rugers or the Browning. |

i will add my opinion to the rest. i have the browning buck mark 5.5. it has THE greatest trigger i have ever used on a 22. very accurate. forgot what the list is today, i'd have to go back to my lit. that is at the shop.
second, walther has come out with a new 22. you can see a pic of it at glocktalk.com. i am thinking of ordering one. back to the browning, there are two models now. the buckmark with the 5.5 inch barrel and there is a fluted model that is new this year if that is your flavor. |

i have 2 ar 22 cal conversions.
one is a colt ar-15/m-16 conversion its ok the 10 round capacity sucks but the 30 round ciener mags will work in them but the colt kit will make them inoperable over extended usage. the other is a standard issue 22 conversion that uncle sam used. purchased from sarco. its really nuke proof but again the 10 round capacity sucks accuracy and jamups in both are about the same if you want a 22 conversion kit for your ar by all means go for cieners its a better kit (imo) in the long run |

I agree with this on the lower grade smiths like the 422 or their new alloy framed target guns. questionable Fitting and easily broken parts abound in them. they aint what they used to be. |

I have a SW 422 probably about 7-8 yrs old at most.. cool little gun. Kind of a pain to clean and really picky about ammo |

Shot the Ruger 22/45 for the first time last Friday. Was very unenthusiastic about the sights, but with Mini mags, the thing seemed to shoot pretty close to where I was aiming. Feeding and extraction 100% thus far.
Plus, reassembly is always a fun challenge. I managed to seize the entire works during reassembly last night. I think that the 22/45 with the light contour SS barrel has reduced the normally objectionable weight of the Ruger to a nearly field-worthy level. Wish it came from the factory set up for Ruger rings. Still a bargain. I have heard mostly good things about the Buckmark, especially re: accuracy,but I also recall seeing a a slide release going gunny bag and flopping around. |

The Buckmark is one of the best gun purchases I have ever made and is much easier to take down than the Ruger .22 I sold.

IMO the S&W model 41 is the best .22LR pistol. I have an older model with the cocking indicator. When I bought it used, it had the 7.5" barrel w/comp. I bought (2) brand new 5.5" barrels for it. One I use with open sights and the other has a Tasco ProPoint3 on it. I have tried all brands of ammo in this pistol and have found that CCI STD VEL works the best.
[b][red]WARNING: on the subject of .22LR ammo, Remington Thunderbolts is the dirtiest stuff I have ever used. Winchester Wildcats (bulk pack) has the most miss-fires.[/red][/b] I also own a S&W model 22A, a total POS. I keep it in my safe as it has never worked right and I am ashamed to even sell it to some one. I have owned several .22's including Ruger and Beretta, but the S&W 41 fits me the best. OSA |

Ruger 22/45 Model P512 The MkII has that hyper-angled grip of the Luger, and that makes it difficult for many people to hold properly. The 22/45 is the same upper with a 1911-style lower. I prefer this over the MkII. Also, there's a kit available (for any Ruger .22 pistol) that replaces the take-down lever and allows you to strip the gun by removing a single allen bolt. I'm getting one to allow the use of a Hogue HandAll grip. -Troy |

I have the Browning Buckmark Camper. Great price, great trigger, great feel. Very accurate.
The only thing is the factory sights could have been better. They're a bit "course". Also reassembly can be tricky. That mainspring can be a bitch until you figure out a good way to do it. Just nitpicks, really. I LOVE mine. |
