All of the nazi/communist/antifa/protest/monument/derp threads in GD are getting old for now. How about a little facilitated discussion. Let's compare the U.S. military's two primary attack helicopters. So which is superior? The AH-1Z Viper or the AH-64D and/or E Apache. I'm a Hawk crew dog and prior Marine, but my knowledge of both airframes is limited. I know we have some former Snake Drivers here, so their input is certainly welcome. Let's look at some of the following, feel free to add:

1. Aircraft capabilities and performance, to include maintenance
2. Armament
3. Avionics
4. Operational history
5. Survivability
6. Tactics
7. "Fear factor"

Bad ass pics are welcome too.

Does the Apache not currently have air to air missile capability? I know the Viper can carry sidewinders.

... not even close, AH-64E is far superior

The D even had the mounts for sidewinders, BUT we do not use them. I the the Brits or Issys do in their version of the 64.

I would not want to engage in A2A combat in a sidewinder-equipped helimachopter.  No thank you.

The D model apache has already proven to be far superior than the aging cobra.  The soon to be E model will make it even that much better.  Might as well as an f15E vs a p51.

No. All of this is wrong.

The Zulu Cobra is not aging, and it's certaily not antiquated. The E model Apache is not "soon to be", it's been flying in combat since 2014. Neither one is far superior to the other.

@azmp5 So you should be able to offer evidence of that? Or you just doing a drive buy declaration and disappearing like the other dude who made a similar claim?

The soon to be "e" model is a upgraded D model that rolled out in 2011 according to 30 seconds on google.

What exactly is so much better about the helicopter from 2011, than the "aging" helicopter from 2010?

Far superior how? That was the intended point on the topic, facilitate discussion. What makes it allegedly better?

I would pay attention to what Winston says, hopefully he will come back and elaborate. He has a bias I'm sure but he's had access to information everyone else in this thread never will.

The only significant differences are that the Apache has a 30mm gun while the Viper has a 20mm.  Also, the Viper is marinized for sea operations.

Besides the gun they have the same available armaments.

The differences are at the edges.  On the whole they're very very comparable aircraft.

Me too.

It actually came up in a conversation a few weeks ago and my buddy bought it after I told him how fantastic it was. He loved it, in all its early 90's action movie glory

The apache with long bow will be far superior when engaging armored formations.

I'd be curious to know about differences in sensors, OR rates and doctrine.

The Viper has the ability to mount the Longbow as well. However it is mounted on one of the wings as opposed to mounted on the rotor head like the Apache.

There have to be some decent radar shadows with the wing mounted design.
