Hopkinsville just isn't on the center line of the eclipse path it is also near the peak point of the eclipse where the shadow hits the earth most directly.  Where I live will see 94% of the eclipse but it turns out even 99% does not compare being in the 100% totality shadow and watching the sun completely disappear and it the area turning to night.  So I'm driving 3 hours to Hopkisville with the S/O and kids to witness it.  There is a thread in Kentucky Hometown forum about it but that forum doesn't see much traffic, so I'm posting here.

Anyone else going to Hopkinsville?

I have to go to work, so I will be in Russellville.

I do have my glow in the dark eclipse T-shirt, however.

I'm going to try to get over there. I'm hearing of a lot of traffic already. I've been in Ohio since my son left for boot camp, but a friend of mine who is still around town said every hotel and motel room in the area is booked. I'm looking to be back in Bowling Green around 10:00-10:30 am and then make my way over to Hopkinsville for the show. I'm hoping it's not a complete traffic jam.

Nope, I came to Nashville for the eclipse. Going to Hopkinsville to go diving on Thursday though.

Odds are it will be cloudy here tomorrow, and I'm not driving anywhere no matter what.  If I can't see the eclipse because of clouds it will just be that much darker because of the clouds, which ironically, is me looking on the brighter side of things.

But do you have your eclipse glasses?!?

I'm in a 96% totality zone. That's good enough for me.

How do you find out what % totality you are in?

I'm pretty close to Hopkinsville so I'll probably just stay put.

Damn! That's my hometown. I moved away in 1999 and have only been back a few times since, last for my father's funeral in 2014.

I have a friend that works for Kentucky Tourism. I sent her a message asking how many of the teeming hordes they were expecting, but she never got back to me.

There are several websites.  Put your zip code in here.  https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/7/25/16019892/solar-eclipse-2017-interactive-map

My zip says - The eclipse will peak at 1:08:35 pm CDT, when the moon obscures 94.7% of the sun.

ETA:  If you want to see the total eclipse, you'll need to travel 112 miles SW.

I've been watching the Waze live map and traffic really hasn't been bad.  Other pictures show vacant spots at campsites and other prime viewing locations.  So either the crowd will be less than expected or they are all going to try to drive there tomorrow.

I have a reserved spot at the Murray State building south of town.  There are a bunch of side roads with no buildings around that area, so I'm guessing people that didn't reserve anything will be parking along the roads.

It is more like a town of 30,000 people will have an extra 100,000 people, for a few hours.  Not the end of the world.  Gridlock in the middle of town for sure but I'm not expecting anything close to a shit show.

95% even 99% is not the same thing as 100%.  School let us outside for one in the early 1990s.  It was underwhelming to say the least.  The 100% totality on the other hand has non-spiritual people saying it was a spiritual event that made them feel connected to something larger.

This video does the best job of explaining/demonstrating why totality is a whole other animal compared to a partial.  https://www.facebook.com/BentonCoSheriff/videos/7859492527445938/

It's a SHADOW.

The difference between 94% and 100% is orders of magnitude, not 6%. Actual nighttime dark, with the temperature drop and everything. Instead of seeing the sun, at 100% you see the corona. I don't even know how cool that is, because I've never seen it before. 2+ minutes of darkness. I think it would be worth the trip.

If you can wait 7 years, there will be another crossing over southern Illinois.

Fun fact: the shadow of the sun travels from the west coast to the east in about an hour and a half. IIRC, it averages about 1800 MPH across the ground, depending on the sun's angle.

Ever looked at the moon through a half way decent telescope?

It's king of jarring how often you have to move it.

Staying in Clarksville. No point driving that far for 2.5 minutes of shadow. The insanity surrounding this thing is crazy. Yes it's cool and all, but not drive 6 hours cool like so many in town are doing right now.

In Hopkinsville.  Traffic is just now starting to pick up.  No real congestion getting here.  Stopped in Kelly Kentucky yo see the UFO landing site.  Two families claim one landed 62 years ago...of course they shot at it and chased the little green men away.
