My only reservation is that it should have a midlength gas system, otherwise I would have picked one up already.

The Wolf upper seems to be solid. It shoots nice groups and has been 100% since the first round.

BF, any chance of a gel test with 100 grain Wolf? The SST is what I would expect from a Hornady hunting round. Very adequate.

These are photo's of 123gr sst in 6.5G.  Out of a JP Rifles 24" barrel with matching bolt.  I am not trying to suggest I am a top notch shooter, this was strapped into a Caldwell Lead Sled with a velcro strap.  With 25lbs of weight in the tray.  The groups I shot with wolf were CONSIDERABLY more open.  No where near the accuracy of Hornady.

5 @100 yds

5 @ 200 yds

why is this "Pinned"

As for the whole deer round yeah its a decent deer round but why would you want this for home defense unless you lived out in the middle of no where.

home defense for me is 12 gauge or 300 Blk  backed up by 45 ACP

A little better than I expected from a 16 in barrel. 6.5 is kinda slow. It shines because it is so efficient. This round should still be supersonic at 900 to 1000 yards.

Yup. Doesn't need to be screaming right out the gate because it's an endurance runner or a round, no a sprinter.

Nice video. Id like to see a 120g federal fusion test as well.
I have heard so many good things about this ammo, it's just too bad neither of my 6.5 grendel rifles like the Hornady factory sst rounds. I get pierced and cratered primers.

Could you test the cheap, lighter Wolf load you mentioned as a comparison?
Link Posted: 8/8/2017 6:52:27 PM EDT
[#23]
Here is an example of what the Hornady 123 grain SST load does in
flesh and blood at just over 100 yards. This is excellent performance. It's well suited for hunting
deer sized game and would work very well for personal protection if you
are not paranoid about over penetration. It is after all, a rifle.

I hope OP does test the 100 grain Wolf FMJ-BT load.

Wolf's 100 grain FMJ-BT bullet design was based on the 5.45x39mm 7N6 military load,
it has a high BC, is very long for its weight and the nose has a very large air cavity in it.
The air cavity pushes the weight to the rear of the bullet allowing for a rapid yaw cycle.
The end result is much improved terminal performance compared to a traditional non-fragmenting FMJ.
Due to the rapid yaw cycle it is not so velocity dependent as designs which rely on fragmentation.

I know Bill Alexander and the Barnaul engineers worked hard on this projectile design
and the end result is excellent.

In a 16" barrel that seems right. My 20" seems to get it up close to 2500, and My handloads for the 123gr class come in about the same.

As others have pointed out, it goes the distance well, at my elevation I'm supersonic to 1200 yards with the right load.

16" barrels typically will spit a 123gr Hornady SST at 2435-2480fps, depending on the barrel and temp.

Most of my 16" chronograph readings have averaged 2460fps with Hornady.

20" guns are normally 2520-2560fps with the same load.

18" are 2460-2490fps.

Doesn't matter a whole lot though because of BC.

An SBR Grendel with half the barrel length of a 20" 30-30/150gr RN still has more speed and energy at 400yds than the .30-30 does at 200yds.

Within 200yds, the Grendel has all kinds of retained energy and speeds that would normally be from a longer-barreled rifle with more case capacity and faster mv, so looking at the mv alone is very deceptive.

Yep, learned to not even care about it except for getting good firing solutions. One of my 123gr SMK loads has exceptionally good accuracy at 2450 fps, I can get it going 100fps faster but don't even care, it hardly matters past 200y.

(everything I learned about reloading for 6.5g has been from your book, and I thankyou for that)

I might be able to provide an upper.  I've got a wolf barrel and empty upper sitting around doing nothing.  In fact, I might be able to send a 12.5" upper as well for comparison.

Interested?

Well, when he shot it, it was a werewolf.

By the time he tracked it down, it had already turned back into the neighbors dog.

Nice test/demo, showing the excellent performance of the Grendel and that load.

A couple comments.

Replace body cavity for gel, and that's just lethal as hell.

What brass catcher is that? I would like to have one of them.

Thanks.
