Well, they started blaming everything bad that is happening on the president.  It is a Linux class so politics has nothing to do with the class. The instructor and one class member who is older than me ( I am 40) said that while watching CNN the story this and that. I started tuning them out because I mumbled this is bull shit and the instructor told me that he gives everyone the grades people deserves and he doesn't like smurks and rude remarks.

So I let them go on their little rants about how women are treated unequal in interviews when they are entrepreneurs and how the president is causing net neutrality. I started to laugh and when I was asked why I was laughing I responded go be poor somewhere else.

The instructor has not taught us shit in this class his 2 favorite things to say are google it, and it's in the book. he doesnt show us anything. So after the little shots back and forth we are given a assignment  and a few of us start it and he says hold on I have a client ( he has his own company he works at during the day) that is having issues and he takes a phone call and then gets on the computer, after 30 minutes I ask are we done here I would like to go home and he says he has to do his lecture, and then goes back to his computer and again says give me a minute I am helping a client. I then say shouldn't that be done on your time, we all pay to come and sit in here to learn not wait for you to finish personal business that you are getting paid for by someone else.  There was no response and I ended up leaving.   I love my classes but this guy is a total asshat. His excuse for everything is the government.

Go to the Dean of his department with evidence. The phone calls in class should get him removed.
Being off track and teaching other than the subject should also get him called on the carpet. This guy is adjunct faculty, right? If you report him with evidence, I wouldn't anticipate signing up for any future classes taught by him, unless it's at Podunk Tech.

ETA can also go to Dean of Students or the Ombudsman. I once got a faculty member dragged in off vacation to sign papers by calling the Ombudsman (who reports to the President of the school).

Go to the Dean but just know they will circle the wagons to protect their own, even if they feel he is 100% wrong.

Enjoy your F.

I'd be demanding an audit of my work and grades, because he's going to rip you a new one.

You need to write a letter to the College Board, CC the Dean and every higher up at that college. Tell them exactly what happened, that he is more interested in pushing his own political agenda than teaching and that you didn't pay to be force fed someone's political propaganda.

I had the same thing happen with an Environmental Science teacher who mistook the classroom for a pulpit. He would spend the entire class telling us how Al Gore was going to save the world and villainizing George Bush. Many of his "sermons" had nothing to do with the environment.

I wrote a letter to the Dean, College Board, etc., and a few days later he apologized to every one of his classes and never did it again.

The fact that he insinuated that you grade would be harmed if you didn't go along with it makes it that much worse. People need to quit tolerating this crap and push back HARD. You can make it from an anonymous email account if that helps. Maybe someone else in the class overhead everythig and didn't like him threatening your grade.

GO GET HIM.  No expectation of privacy.
Ill law listed below.

Record for days then give overview of time spent on what with tape backup.
If it was all in the book and teacher didn't need to do anything why would you need a teacher.  There are all kinds of test proctors who would give the test for much less than cost of a instructor for the material.

They have updated the law since  below but it is still written poorly.
You have no expectation of privacy from the person you are speaking to.

In People v. Melongo, Docket No. 114852 (Ill. Mar. 20, 2014), the Supreme Court of Illinois held that Illinois' two-party eavesdropping statute, 720 Ill. Comp. Stat. 5/14-1, -2 (scroll down), was unconstitutional on its face. The statute made it a crime to use an "eavesdropping device" to overhear or record a phone call or conversation without the consent of all parties to the conversation, regardless of whether the parties had an expectation of privacy. The Court held that the recording provisions of the statute, as written, adversely affected the First Amendment rights of people making recordings in a substantial number of circumstances where there were no legitimate privacy interests.  The Court further held that a provision of the statute prohibiting the disclosure of recordings likewise ran afoul of the First Amendment.

This does not mean, however, that recording of communications is now universally permitted in Illinois:

Recordings may still be subject to the "one-party" consent rule of the Federal wiretap act.
Communications reaching other states may be subject to the wiretapping laws of the remote state.
Secret recordings may still support an Illinois common-law claim for intrusion into the privacy of another. See, e.g., Narducci v. Village of Bellwood, 444 F. Supp. 2d 924, 938 (N.D. Ill. 2006).
Another Illinois statute, not necessarily affected by the decision in the Melongo case, makes it illegal to "videotape, photograph, or film" people without their consent in "a restroom, tanning bed, or tanning salon, locker room, changing room or hotel bedroom." 720 Ill. Comp. Stat. 5/26-4(a) (scroll down).

Consult The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press's Can We Tape?: Illinois for more information on Illinois wiretapping lawyer.

That's demand a refund behavior. The guy is not doing his job and that hurts the students and reputation of the school. Ask that he be fired. That shit is unacceptable.

He is under the assumption that it's his time, not yours. But you are paying for an education there, so it is your time as well.

Do you think if you pulled out a cell and starting talking to a client during his lecture he would allow that? Hell no, so don't you allow it either.

Sounds like a shit bag. I would work to get him fired. And I don't say that lightly.

All these schools today rely on part-time lecturers to save money, not to have to pay benefits or offer tenure.

This is what you get as a result.

ETA This shit is common at all schools for classes that are not part of the CS degree curriculum. For instance, for a CS major you would take operating systems and study the inner workings of modern OS's, not how to run Linux. Typically, if they offer a specific OS at all (common at community college), it will be taught by part-time staff who are paid hourly, receive no benefits or chance for advancement. It's hard to find good people that will accept that, so they hire IT people looking for side jobs. Same situation at technical schools.

I'd complain to the dean about him.  It is entirely unprofessional and a conflict of interest to take outside business calls while at the podium on the school's dime.  As a teacher, he should be dedicated to instructing his students.  They are, after all, acquiring the foundation upon which the knowledge base may be expanded beyond his education.   As a representative of the institution, it is unprofessional of him to be handling outside business matters while on school time.  I'd call it a conflict of interest.  Who is paying him to be at that podium?  The school or the private business.

Second, to keep the students waiting while he attending to personal businses matters does nothing to promote his credibility as an instructor.  It's one thing if the wife called and junior is sick and needs to be rushed to the hospital. No employer is so heartless as to punish someone for that but it's quite another to take a personal call while at the podium.  He must think little of his students and their time and money if he is willing to ignore them for over thirty minutes.

If he is probationary or contractual, it would be nice to see that he doesn't receive tenure, that his contract isn't renewed and that his services are no longer required at the university.

Remember, you paid to be there, not to hear someone handle personal business calls.

Class is over next Wednesday and there are no assignments. I have a A in the class and I take screen shots of my grades to keep in case he changes them. He is adjunct, he brags on how he teaches at another school also.  I am older than I used to be so I have thick skin.  We wrote down all the times he threatened us as a class and when he showed favorites to his old lab partner and giving her 100 points for do you have a book and she didn't. He told her I know you're good. and the person next to her got a 0 for not having it.  Like I said I just thought it was weird that this is a computer science class and everything is about CNN and politics.   Monday is a regular class and the final is on Wens.  If I faill all of a sudden I will talk to the VA rep and the dean of students.  This instructors boss is one of my instructors next semester so I have to watch what I say and how I say it.  There is a way to file anomalous  so a few of us are thinking about doing it that way.

Good for you for speaking up, but you should file a complaint with administration and do it ASAP. D-Bag professors need to be called out and put on record and if for nothing else to cover you ass grade wise.

My sister has a biology class with an an Indian professor and his accent is so heavy she can can barely understand him. Every student was told to buy a $300 e-book but on the first night he tells them I do not use the book and that he does not even have a code to use such a book. The class tries to return the book and they were all told no as the class already started. He tried to change the start time of the class from 7pm to 6pm and thankfully there were two other students who sided with my sister and said BS this is the scheduled time and that they have other obligations prior.

She goes to class last night which was the second to last day for the summer class before the final on Mon. As she walks in and he is ending the class. He decided to hold the class at 6pm and only for an hour instead of the three it is scheduled for. Her and a few others who are walking in for class at 7pm class flat out said WTF. He says Oh I posted a notice on my office door about the change. They try to explain to him that is not the proper way to notify a class as not every student has reason to walk past your office which is on another building. They said why are you ending the class when we have three more chapters to cover for the test. He says oh I will not include the last three chapters on the final. Her and others ask then why can't we do a review with the remaining time and he says nope I have to go.

Tonight she is going to head to her last class before the final and she gets notified by the school that the campus is closed because of rolling blackouts in the area, funny thing is there has not been a word on the local news about rolling blackouts

Funny, in my 5 1/2 years of college , I never had a single prof. discuss politics or offer his opinion on anything that was not part of the course at hand.

I think I had a psych prof my Freshmen year that talked about the weather a couple of times, but that was it.

It was always business, no time for BS. Different era.

Hell, even my polysci prof never said shit and I started his course the same month Reagan took office (01/1981).

ETA And the second half was in San Francisco. Maybe Berkeley would have been different.

Well, there you go. It's hit or miss there. I spent a lot of time at community college after graduating from college because they had up to date offerings taught by engineers in the software business. I wanted to learn x86 ASM and the university only taught IBM S/360 ASM, as did the community college, but they also had x86. I signed up and got this chubby middle-aged guy who wrote x86 ASM for Bank of America. He taught at night for a few extra bucks. The guy absolutely kicked ass. Never pulled his punches either. I learned a hell of a lot about x86 ASM from that guy. He was a master.

Then I had a guy teaching Novell who was a moron.

And a Chinese woman teaching C++ who was just learning herself and who knew jack about OOP, so we spent the entire semester on IOStreams. Shit, that sucked. She was a great 'C' teacher, one of the best. Just not ready to teach C++.

I have to say the Indians are the worst. They are there for the money and/or to have a teaching position on their resume. When in doubt, avoid.
