My wife and I argue about this with her calling me a cheap bastard.
Assuming the service is fine at dinner, when the bill comes, do u calculate the amt pre tax or post tax ? Please settle this 30 yr fight. |
I tip 10% minus Drinks, Taxes, and what I perceive to be the Restaurants overhead, which is about 25% of the bill.
WTH would you do that? Is it a gift to the IRS for a job well done? The restaurant doesn't get the tax so why tip on it?
I tip off the total with tax cuz I'm not a cheap bastard. Go be poor somewhere else OP.
ETA: I worked as a waiter/bartender through college, so I may be a little biased. A couple bucks doesn't mean as much to me as it does for them. /shrug |
Nope.
I also take the amount spent on alcohol into consideration as well. |
tax x 2 is about 15% so that is all i tax. to answer your question no that would not include the tax in the tip equation.
Assuming good service, 20% after tax and I'll round up to the nearest dollar because I'm not a cheap ass.

Not supposed to tip on tax, the (greedy, entitled) servers don't get that*. To answer, it depends on the place, bill, service, if I know they server or am a regular, for me. Many places I just round down (ie: $12.00 tab, I tip 20% on $12.) Someplaces where it's a soup and sandwich for $6, I give the server $2 if they are good. So I guess it depends.
*At the beach here we have a beach fee/tax added... This turns your 6-7% tax into a 11-12% tax. Yeah, I don't tip on that. On the entitled/greedy bit: There are place here where employees start at minimum, bartenders at $10+, they get furious if they don't get at least 20%. Hell, the Panera Bread checkout persion will give you the evil eyen when not tipping. Friend is a bartender/college student... She just booked a 12day trip to China. I asked how she afforded that and she says "we make great money you know," but boy they get pissed if you don't tip at least 20% of the total. My Mom, who was raised proper and with all those "etiquette" classes and books informs me you are really only supposed to tip 10% on alcohol. Tipping has gotten put of control. |
Post tax you cheap bastard!
a $100 meal has only 5-10 dollars tax almost everywhere in the country.... 20% of that is $1-$2.... you seriously eat out enough that you are gonna bank on saving $2? It really helps your waitress..... a 20% tip on 90 would be $18, and $20 if you "tip on the tax".... of course, maybe you tip 10% in which case it would be $9 vs $10.... see my point? Call me what you want.
I look at the total... count 20% and then round up to make the math easier. I have a lot of friends who are waitresses and bartenders... and it is a SHIT SHIT job. I do my best to make things better. Plus I get free stuff... went out on Tuesday and the girl behind the bar bought me 4 of my 6 drinks. So I took extra care of her. |
This ought to be a good thread.
For not shitty service, I estimate 25-30%, and then round to the nearest whole dollar amount favoring 5s. |
Myself? 20% before tax and then round up to the next dollar. That's my base unless service is really lousy. Tip could go up depending on the size of my party, little kids and any special resourcefulness displayed by the wait staff. But never less than $3. (Which just might equal the breakfast special)
Nah, I only tip the pre tax amount.
I take note of the tax though. That's how I base my tip. Tax is 7 3/4% where I live. I look at the tax amount and double it, which always gives me a 15 1/2% baseline. When the service is good, I give extra. Works great, especially when lots of drinks were involved. |
Whatever the number in BOLD is what I tip on. You dudes looooove to overthink the whole tipping thing.
20% of the total bill, unless service was absolute piss poor (empty restaurant and no service etc) or above average; then it will be adjusted accordingly.
I don't calculate.
Small plate , small tip. Large family dinner, large tip. |
I always subtract the tax before tipping.
They don't get a free 20% on 6% just because the government had it's pockets open. |

I always tip well. Especially to the restaurants I frequent the most. The staff love me and treat me like a king when I dine in their establishments. For example, if I go into my favorite sushi place, even if they backed up on orders when I arrive, I will still get one or two pieces of my sushi out quickly as a nod to being a good tipping regular. They even comp me a drink now and then.
I like good service, and I will pay for it. |

20% pre-tax if service is good.
ETA: To answer OP's original question I never tip on tax. |

I tip on the total. Level of service depends on tip. No set amount.
Yes. The difference for me is $1.40 for every $100. Servers live on tips mostly. Most make something like $2.13 per hour in wages. They usually share their tips with the bussers, hostesses, and bartenders too.

TOTAL bill (includes tax) plus 20%, it goes up or down from there depending on service and hotness of waitress.

All the cheap ass guys in here. 20% on the total including tax. Man oh man, you guys are cheap.
BUT: If I were retired and living on A pension and watching pennies I would have a different attitude I guess. I tip extra if there are boobs involved. A waitress with a nice rack showing may get 30% out of me, I am weak that way. |
I just take 20% of the total and then round up to the next dollar or two. If service sucked I will usually give them exactly 15% and not a penny more.
For those of you that suck at math, to get 20% just take 10% and double it. |

I maybe a cheap ass but I have not got to the point of shooting a steady diet of TULA.. Lake City or nothing ... |

I leave 10 bucks minimum or 20% of the total rounded up to an even number which ever is larger.
