My dad took an old Colt 45 with him to the central Pacific in WWII. It came home with more notches in the grip than it left with.

A 45 Colt or .357 in a 4 3/4 barrel makes a nice carry gun and both work well balistically.

This sounds like a great idea until you're facing 15 to 50 heavily armed terrorists when you're walking your dog. It's your funeral.jpg

I have many times. With this 4 5/8" .44 special in a Tom Threeperson rig, and the Ruger Montado in .45 LC I would hate to reload under stress with one......but the mean streets of my rural town probably won't require it. p.s.....99% of the time I carry a G19 and a 642 http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h227/rnorris/ElPasoThreePersons001.jpg http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h227/rnorris/hunting2010061.jpg View Quote I carry my Vaquero in the same Tom Threepersons setup from time to time. It works. Mostly it's a G23 and my 442 though. |

Old cowboy action shooter here.
Hell yes I'd carry one! Several of my old CAS pards do just that. They shoot the guns in competition and are quite capable wth them. A soft lead HP out of a moderately warm .45LC is a looong way from a mouse fart load. But don't listen to me. I've been known to ccw a cap&ball Colt 1860 Army .snubbie. |

LOL - " . . . Sam weighs the pros and cons . . " Like one con is its a freaking single action revolver. Is it really that hard to write something interesting about guns and shooting?

While not my normal around town carry choice I'd have very few qualms about carrying my FA97 44 Special 4.25". That and my custom Redhawk 4" are my main on the hip guns when out hiking or in the woods.

If you've got a gun (any gun), and know how to make solid hits from field expedient positions and while moving (hopefully to cover)...... then you can defend yourself in America today.
Good on ANY armed citizen. How many commenting here have been in a gunfight on American soil? Really, how many of you? I don't carry a single action revolver to defend myself/family, but to those that do, that's their business. |

The article is worried about a blocking bar and didn't even mention that those are single-action pistols??? ... View Quote Carrying a single action revolver without either a transfer bar or similar safety mechansm which prevents the firing pin from contacting the primer of a chambered round is dangerous. |

I've got a friend who's dad owns an original LeMat and my friend owns a reproduction. Those things are just downright wicked to shoot.

A repro wouldn't generally be my first choice for a self defense situation. However, if I needed to defend myself enroute to a BBQ, a CAS event or a plinking session; I wouldn't toss it away and frantically look for something better, till I was out of Ammo. The only real downside would be the reloading. But I have heard of guys that where scary fast at reloading even SAA's. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Seems like a thread fail to me....Aimless was trying to incite a cyber-riot calling SA revolvers "stupid", and trolling to see who would "admit" to carrying one....result was pics of some nice hoglegs, and nobody terribly serious about packing them for protection.
When I CCW a SA revolver, it's usually in the winter, and I'm doing "rural stuff", like going between my house and the farm, not going to town, not intending to interact with anyone, and have an itch to shoot my .45 LC or .44 Sp. I lOVE SA revolvers, have killed a few deer with them, and I shoot them pretty well. They come in GREAT gunfight calibers. I wouldn't feel unarmed with one at all. But the pretty much impossible reload (under pressure), and the single action only operation prevents anyone from taking them very serious for SD. But they certainly aren't "stupid cowboy guns" EDIT....I just read the article, possibly one of the worst "articles" ever written. The writer was pretty ignorant. For one, there are shit tons on concealable holsters avilable for single action revolvers. |

Why not both? https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/214519/Winchester-M1887-Mares-Leg-257712.JPG I've carried everything from a .44 cap and ball revolver to a 5 1/2" .44mag Redhawk in the past. I've also carried .22's and all manner of other nonsense when times was hard and it was what I had. Wouldn't mind a Colt Lightning replica if somebody were to make one for a non-ludicrous price. Hell, if nobody who'd go out the door with a 6 shot .32 or .380 has any business making fun of a guy lugging a SAA. I have mentioned it before, but I knew a guy that policed with a Colt SAA .38-40. He was very good
with it and could shoot your eyes out before you knew it. He shot the tire out of a car full of robbers at night, with poor lighting and it was moving away from him. He fired twice and hit the tire twice. A deputy near him asked "don't you have to cock that thing each shot"? He could fire pretty rapid. |

A single action of one brand or another is one of my remaining wish-I-had guns.

Yup. Folks carry 6 shot .38's, 7 and 8 shot .32, .380, and 9mm everyday. Most of the time they don't carry reloads. The NA mini revolvers have been sold for years and I imagine they get carried some as well. I submit that a 45 LC or .44 Schofield is at least the equivalent of the above modern carry pieces. And the rounds are not going to just bounce off a mother fucker. View Quote |
