The biggest obstacles to substantive change in IL, are Madigan & Cullerton. Until their both gone, nothing will change.

In the meantime, let it burn.

Somebody explain to me how Illinois' situation is any different than the federal gubermint's situation.

Both have spent funds they have no way of paying back...yet they just keep on spending and somebody keeps fronting them more credit.

Incidentally, they're 'Illini' and not 'Illinoisians'. I guess you get what you pay for.

A state doesn't have a central bank to print the currency or buy the debt.

Same reason Greece, Italy, and Spain have problems when the EU in aggregate can print Euros.

Eventually it all falls down by way of wheelbarrows full of cash.  Not having a printing press means the states fall first.  Nation (or EU) takes a little more time.

That is Madigan's endgame.

He's proposing impassable an impassable budget so Rauner will vetoe it and Dems can use it against him for not passing the budget.

His constituents will keep voting for him and Dems will continue to elect him speaker.

A few things of note:

1) What happens with Puerto Rico will set precedent for what happens to Illinois (and later Pennsylvania, etc.).

2) We cannot allow, in any shape or form, a federal bailout of state obligations.

3) Financial reality trumps all, even the Illinois state constitution. If there is no money, there's no fucking money; you cant wish your way around it. Eventually pensions will be cut through a forced bankruptcy proceeding much like Puerto Rico.

So, a federal bail out would amount to nothing more than the state bank increasing the states line of credit...thereby increasing the national debt, no?

concur with Sherrick.  Cut it out as a city state and let the rest of the state recover on its own.  We should do the same with:

Denver & Boulder in Colorado.
San Francisco.  Secede it from the nation.
Lost Angeles.
Boston.
Philadelphia.

The Chicago dems hate having a republican governor.  They're refusing to give him a balanced budget and blaming him for the mess(for not accepting their "comprehensive budget solution"), in hopes of getting a dem governor elected next year.  It's all about the vote, I hope it backfires on them.

This is what happens when you kick the can down the road for decades and promise shit that's just mathematically impossible. Fuck this state . The difference between the state of Illinois and the Federal Government is debt to GDP ratio.  With that said, you can't spend your way out of debt.

My friend worked as a crane operator in Chicago in the union. He just retired on the West Coast of Florida at the age of 55 collecting about 60 K or more per year.

Dumb ass politicians who are supposed to represent the people never put in any type of clause about retiring and staying in the state.

It's a clusterfuck for sure.....I'm sure my taxes will be going up any day now.

They need to be cutting the social programs and all politician salaries.  I have a friend who works for Eastern Illinois University who has medical insurance through the state.  She's been denied appointments by 2 different doctors unless she paid cash upfront, because they know they won't get paid.  It's fucking ridiculous and it sits squarely with Madigan and his goons.

Illinois needs to push Cook county into the lake.....then we'd have a chance of having a decent state.....

With the state $15 billion behind on its bills (a value worth about a quarter of its quickly growing annual expenses) it's a bold move to consider doing work for the state.
