I have to move to Columbia for a couple months, or possibly even up to a year. I've done the regular google checks, but I always like to ask on here; what should I know in advanced? Any locals that love it or hate it? Any "must see or do" things? I know I'm good to bring even my NFA stuff, but any weird laws I should know?

Prepare to live in the hottest place on Earth.

I have very little functional knowledge of Columbia except it is very hot compared to the rest of the state.

That's a bad law, not a weird law. I mean more like how some cities limit things that the state's don't, so it doesn't show up under state laws. Or, i can't remember where, but one town had a no turn on red law that was for the whole town and not just posted signs.

Well, those of us who live in my part of the state we have a saying. The worst part of the drive to Columbia is...you end up in Columbia.

No, apparently getting a stateside assignment is my reward for spending the first half of the year in Egypt. They thought I would be happier living in the US for a little while then making triple my normal salary in South Korea.

Pops Pizza is just about the best pizza you'll ever get. That says a lot since I'm an NY'er.

Lots of Revolutionary War history (Francis Marion, Cornwallis HQ)

Flying Saucer beer bar is pretty nice.

College football is Huge.

Great state fair.

I could go on.

Charleston is a couple hours away and worth it to drive there any chance you get.

There seems to be a prerequisite that you have to meet me and D16 at some point.  We are the local welcoming committee.

p.s.  not specifically for butt-stuff, but who knows where the night might take us.  It is Columbia, after all.

Did they have humidity on par with that area right under Satan's nutsack after running a marathon?

If not this is a different kind of heat.

Exactly. This heat is a go out the door at 6am, soaked by 6:07. In dry heat that shit evaporates and cools you some. This just compounds into a goo. Like being in hot pool but not. Regardless, by 10 am if you have not found an ac or applied something like monkeybutt powder and you have been active you'll have developed a wonderful heat rash in your groan and life just sucks ass until you can get home to some diaper rash cream.

State preemption for firearm laws, localities can not pass anything more restrictive than state laws.

Traffic camera tickets are not legal for disobeying traffic control devices, officers must witness and deliver citation in person.
Texting and driving is illegal, talking on the phone while driving, I believe, is still legal. Traffic is terrible and everyone is on their phone, watch out.

You can not bring your concealed carry on the statehouse grounds, including the sidewalk.
