No, this was not even close. The GPS on the cams lags by 4 seconds.  I hit about 96 mph here on low boost, 6 psi.  Car tuned to 25 psi.  Its fun, thats all that counts.  Not a mustang, losing control into the neighborhood.  thats a plus.

A long time ago I was an F-15 avionics tech at Eglin and Bitburg.  The highlight of my life was backseat rides in the D model, once at Eglin and once at Duchy.

My oldest boy was also enlisted, now he works UAVs at Creech.

My youngest went to the Academy, '09 grad, UPT at Vance.   Flew 130s for a few years, 3 trips to Afg or Africa.  Now he's a T-6 IP at Columbus.

I have a new grand daughter too.

Bull did you ever met an Eagle driver with the call sign "Kones"?

My big brother.

From your timeline he was in AFROTC  at VSU  while you were at Moody. Y'all were  close then but the community is relatively small. I believe 'Mach' knew "Kones".

Cool stories, keep them coming.

Possibly quibbling, but I won't concede that Sheppard is our "Tier 1 flight school". Years ago, it was the most competitive to get into, because every assignment was a fighter. This resulted in the kids with the highest college GPAs going to Sheppard - but first hand experience tells me that good grades in college does not equate to being a better flyer. Also, foreign instructors aren't necessarily "tier 1" either. Language barrier?  Im sure those who went to ENJJPT will disagree.

It has historically been the most difficult UPT base to get in to, but it's debatable if the end product is any better (IMO). Awhile ago I think there were even talks of shutting it down. I think Sheppard also kept their tweets for years after every other base went to the T-6.

ETA: it has also lost some of its "prestige" in recent years as less kids want to be fighter pilots.

Part of it is lack of fighter slots. We just don't have anywhere near the numbers of fighter aircraft that we used to.

Example: my sons UPT class in 2010.  Approx 30 students, you know how it goes, a few wash out, some go train with the Navy, come come from other places for the second half, etc.  They graduated 26, exactly three got fighter bomber follow on.  Of those three, one got a B-52 slot, the other 2 ended up in UAVs.  Zero fighters from his class of 26.

I am quite familiar with that dynamic - saw lots of UPT classes with similar numbers. Mine included. But that was nearly 10 years ago, and there is more to it today.  A quick Google search will show you that the AF is experiencing a crisis in fighter piloting (and pilots in general) manning. The AF can't keep guys from leaving the service - for a variety of reasons. And this sentiment has found its way into the upcoming generation. Guys don't want the 10 year commitment out of UPT, and for those willing to accept the commitment, they don't want fighter cockpits in the same numbers of the decades previous.

Do the houses on the left as you drive thru the gate still exist?  I was only 12 at the time and a bank was across the street.  I think there were about 4 houses there.  It was awesome because the side of the house was a converted garage with a door that my step bro and me used to use to be total hooligans.

I worked for Jessie Creed in his tobacco fields making 120 bucks a week cropping tobacco.  My older step bro made the same but used to go to the tobacco barn  and gangbang this asian chick with some of the older teens during lunch.  I never saw it, but figured listening to the older dudes that's what was going on.  Hell i was 12.  I made 120 buck a week and spent it all with my bros on base at the Rec Center playing pinball, foosball and ordering us all pizza.

Neat.  The closest thing to legacy I encountered is when I was at Moody a guy got assigned to the same unit and I went to BMT with one of his brothers.  All of his siblings were Air Force.

Also, the base commanders house no longer exists and is a CDC (Child Development Center) now .

I was there 2008-2014 and from what I recall, there were two house where the CDC is currently located but they were torn down shortly after my arrival.  I don't know of any bank across the street but there is one soon after entering the base at the north gate.

Yup, thats them!  My dad was always thankful that the Vietnamese didn't really consider them a threat, and he attributed it to them not getting shot at like the warplanes.   I think the program actually started in 67, but not sure....  my dad did 68-69, and was not the first rotation by far, but it was a relatively tight lipped program.   He did tell us that the radio geeks in the back had clearances slightly higher than God.   What a small Air Force LOL

Hey, it's a good story.

I have a lot of respect for the Triple Nickel, I grew up reading about air-to-air combat in general and fighter action during Vietnam, in particular...so of course the topic of the 555 came up a lot.

One day in 2002 or 2003 we had Richard Stephen "Steve" Ritchie come visit our AFROTC cadet detachment to do a quasi-motivational speech, in which he gave the detachment a signed copy of Speaking of Flying.  I had the honor of getting to personally greet him and accept the book on behalf of our detachment.  He was a cocky but overall decent guy.

Anyway, I guess my point is that it's good to see the legacy of the courage and dedication required for professional airmanship to continue being passed down through generations.  I was a second-rate aviator myself, but if any of my kids show any aptitude for flight I will be happy to see them attempt and succeed at it!

I'm glad you posted that video.   I was debating asking Bullf-16 if some of his students created interesting situations moreso than others.   I went to Laughlin and flew with foreign students.    Nothing more fun than flying THROUGH a full pattern instead of breaking out on top, or gear up landings, or going to 100% in a packed ramp, or breaking both legs by releasing the parachute risers when you're still 40ft above ground.   But those guys sure could party.  Helps when the King gives you $40,000/month for spending money.

Thanks Diesel,

Shooting the Gau-8 from inside the COCK pit, yes i do that on purpose.... at about 250 or so kias is fairly benign compared to watching the brrrrrrp......brrrrrt from outside.  You only get a high frequency vibration that is not really bad.  The sound is kinda loud but a solid high frequency BBBBWWWWHHHAAAAm I guess.  Again, its much more impressive on youtube vids and even more so from the guys at the strafe pits on the ranges where hogs are doing LAS passes.  To be honest, its not really noticeable while your doing it since you're more concerned on good hits on peace time for nickles ore killing shit in war time.

BTW.  Ive been staying away here.  I consider this kinda attention whoring stuff so ive been staying away.  But the student in the OP told me today at the sim building that he heard from an IP at a different base that knew of him or his family...was a member here, and read this thread.. and put 2 and 2 together.  He sent him a text and ......what a small world.  CSB and all....

ETA:  The student in the OP is not a gun guy or member here.  He heard from someone here on arfcom who is a member that has connections to the student in the op or one of his connections that from another base.  Pretty cool and what a small world we are all in here.  Thanks GD, for the civility here.
