Looking at the stamping-690 BAR? Pressure designation right? Are they low recoil rounds? IIRC Remington Nitro-Steel duck loads are 1050 BAR. Might be a good choice for all of us who are buying Shockwaves.

Maybe I'm misremembering markings on my Nitro-Steel. I'll have to see if I have any left and look at them.

It's a new line from Hornady. There's also rifle ammo. I think it's supposed to represent "tactical" without using that word. I got the impression it was supposed to be a bit less expensive than their regular lines but my LGS has it like, $9 for 20 in 5.56. Not cheap. But they may just be trading on the newness of it.  I haven't found a lot of information about it yet.

I tested the 6.5 Creedmoor load last week. It's a little hotter then the precision hunter line as far as MV, shot better in my rifles too.
For about half the price.

If it patterns well (meaning acceptably in your gun) you don't necessarily need the VT wad.

But I'd draw a hard line if it doesn't have plated pellets. You absolutely need those in a defensive round.

i looked for it also, doesn't appear to have it - my critical defense does.

Why is plated necessary?

It's not.  Inside 50 feet, you will never know the difference.

At one time weren't shotgun shells color-coded for gauge or did it just seem that way?

I seem to remember red for 12, yellow for 20, and purple for 16.

Its too bad they didnt use the black tinted nickel like they use in their TAP rifle ammo instead of the high brass. That would actually be pretty cool and would justify that selling price.

so they changed the graphics on the box and print color on the shells.

Plated pellets resist deformation during acceleration out the barrel better (meaning they are not as prone to flat-spotting and flying wild) and they retain the ability to penetrate better even if they hit structures like bone.

One of the primary reasons Ed Moralez had to finish Platt and Mattix with his revolver was because the lead buckshot he had in the 12 gauge performed so poorly. You definitely want hardened pellets if you intend to use buckshot against someone who is trying to kill you.

The wiki article sez Mireles hit Platt in both feet with the 870. Then his pesonal 357 finished the job.  It's a good article btw. And this is how we got to 10mm Kurtz!!

It would have hit him in the torso, but the pellets deformed and flew off path striking him in the foot. See that's why you need to use plated shot.
