I used to think that was a pretty cool movie way back when, but it was recently on TV so I sat and watched it. I could not believe how poorly written it was with regard to our special forces unit allowing itself to navigate into a box canyon with no exit, and being subsequently slaughtered by the cartel forces. It just pissed me off.
Then during the rescue mission I noticed Willem Dafoe's character's gun. WTF is that thing? No stock and no sights? Giant riser, with what..Is that a gas piston? No Buffer tube? He was doing some longer range aimed fire with it as well. Is that what a real operational operator would choose for such a mission? I found it IMFDB- But I still hate it. |

Sometimes you just need a little subgun sized package but you recognize the shortcomings of pistol caliber carbines, and you don't want to deal with the NFA, and the pistol brace hasn't been invented yet.

No US special forces would ever find themselves in a canyon, defeated by a lesser rabble huh?

OP, they knew where they were, how many, etc. When they give them no other option, where else are they going to go? Not to mention it was Supr Squirrel Secret so it would have been hard to call in for support etc. |

I've been trying to find the binoculars he used in the laser marking scene.
Anyone know what those are? |

OP fail. They got boxed in because they got sold out. The cartel cornered them. Im surprised you didnt catch that from the movie.

Was there a reason why a gas system like that didn't become more popular?
It seems like it would allow for a very compact PDW. |

I remember watching that film and scratching my head over that rifle as well. Odd one.

Read the book.
Then you will really know how bad the movie is. And this applies to all the movies based on Tom Clancy's books. |

I always thought of getting one, but I despise Oly Arms more.

maybe someone can find the binos on here:

Stupid gun for sure but I've wanted one ever since I saw the movie when it came out. I echo the sentiment of Hollywood fucking over every Clancy book. Some of his books could have been amazing movies if not for Hollywood faggotry.

One thing I really have a hard time accepting is, a run of the mill everyday U.S. Navy FA-18 cruising at 25,000 ft over Colombia casually drops a a 500lb laser guided bomb on a house.

I always wondered why it didn't have sights. But I wonder even more why Ryan didn't bring a gun. In the book he was a door gunner.

Odd, my co-worker brought up this movie just the other day mentioning how she liked his car he drove and kind of wanted one. Then she found out it was a Ferrari...
