But what I want to know. When beach patrol separated the groups, did the fisherman walk away with his catch?
Those things are everywhere around here lately, size of car hood. Google roughtail stingray
Do people eat those? How are they cooked and what are they like?
Rays are awesome and I love seeing them when I snorkel. Bonus, they taste great!
I've only eaten skate, but I imagine a big ray is just tougher.

One could make a nice pair of boots from that hide, and have enough left over for a matching belt. Fuck the PETA assholes who pulled that shit, to bad the fisherman didn't deck a few of them.

I caught one that size many years ago. Knew my line would break, if I tried to haul it up the pier, like he did. We kept weighted gaffs on lines for this. Guy offers to help, I said sure. We wasn't good at handling the gaff, and got it tangled in my line. Yep, snapped if off.

IGFA all tackle record for a Roughtail Stingray is 405lbs caught in 1972 in Islamorada,Fla.
A ray (the one pictured) that size would taste like shit. They should have released it so it could make more rays (but people are abjectly stupid when it comes to these things). |

Is the population declining? Is it illegal to keep? Can you use the hide to make products? Can you eat the meat? Attitudes like yours are going to end recreational fishing. Just look at red snappers. Recreational fisherman have such a small season because lawmakers and lobbyists not lack of fish. Personally I release 90% of what I could legally keep. But if someone wants to harvest a legal fish I have no right to stop them. |

No charges against the PETA fucks? Great, now they'll think they were right and try it again on someone else. This is also why I have a boat and don't fish in touristy/public areas.
I'm a big inshore fisherman, I absolutely hate Rays and Channel Cats/Gafftops(except the big ones, they are delicious). They eat up my live bait and tackle. |
I've caught a few Good sized rays ,I let them go but I have no problem if someone wants to keep it to eat.
I hooked a big one when people were in the water swimming and they asked what was on the line. I told them it might be a shark and they all got out of the water. |

Yankees invade Florida and there you go.
Back in the old days a fisherman would threaten to use his filet knife on you for messing with his catch. |

Have caught many that size. It's like try to reel up a sheet of plywood. I get it up to the boat and cut the line.
Flying across the bay doing 40 mph and a big one flies about head high reminds you to hook up the engine kill switch. Small ones all over the Tampa waters. |
Does it feel like you are reeling in a trashbag full of water? Then cut the line. The time I spend fighting that damn thing is time i could be going after better fish.
F! Peta but I would not have killed the ray for no reason. Let it make babies.
Thats not even large, when i lived in Puerto Rico; i used to see MONSTER Rays come flying out of the water. It was surreal, i'd say 12-14 ft across. They would break the surface, shoot up a few feet and land with a HUGE splash.
I have caught a few while fishing along the gulf coast, even though I wasn't targeting them they put up a hell of a fight, nothing near that big by the way.
