Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful coins ever minted.
Followed by The Walking Liberty Half.

To collect Morgans you have to have knowledge of all the VAN's (can't remember what it stands for), which are different variations and strikes.
There are hundreds of them.

I buy 1926 Peace dollars as that was the year my Mom was born. I give them to her.

Also 1952 coins for my late Wife.

I collect Morgans insofar as they are a solid source of silver that are cool to hold.

Not particularly interested in numismatic premiums.

Any idea of the grade on that 89cc?
Next to that, 93s is the holy Grail.
95 business strike is next....

VAM refers to different varieties of Morgan and Peace Dollars. The name VAM derives from the two authors of the book The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars, Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis. Leroy Van Allen is still to this day adding different VAM numbers to the known varieties (even though the book hasn't been updated since 1992) and he is the authority on Morgan and Peace Dollars. All of the major grading companies acknowledge some of the VAM designations but as of right now only ANACS will attribute each and every VAM known (a few thousand different varieties).

I don't collect them but I gave mine to the first enlisted guy who saluted me after I got commissioned.   He was a Army National Guard SGT who served 10 years in the USMC as an Infantry dude and then as a MARSOC.  Super dude

I had him walk in front of me and turn around salute me.

I did, but during the last couple of years the chinese really did a marvel job counterfeiting them. And I mean REALLY excelllent fakes.

As in "I stopped buying them when the first of those fakes showed up in my hands and I had an extremely hard time to figure out if they are real or not" well made fakes.

I think that one day those will be worth a fair bit. Somewhat limited production and no longer sanctioned by Fiji, sort of a sleeper coin. I have a fair number of them, few tubes of 1 ounce, half dozen of the boxed ones that came in water and some of the five ounce ones. I might even have a kilo coin laying around. Did they even make a kilo coin?

I don't collect them, but I have a dozen or so silver dollars dating from 1899 to 1972.
Two of them are Morgan silver dollars, both are worn.  One is 1899 the other is so worn I have no clue of the date.

I have about twenty same as my brother. Dad bought them and we inherited. No idea of the worth, I do have an old receipt showing the cost around 3 grand but that's retail.
I'll pass them on to my niece as I have no idea of the worth nor do I care.

I have a number of Morgan silver dollars including several brilliant uncirculated ones dated 1889, several PCGS MS64 uncirculated silver Peace dollars dated 1925, and a gold Double Eagle dated 1865. My favorite is the Double Eagle. I really like that old style reverse featuring the eagle behind the shield. You don't see that style eagle anymore.

One of Pops first assignments as a newly minted Ensign from the Naval Academy bin the 1950's was pursing officer. He was a bit of a collector and would go to the bank and get rolls of newly minted coins and go through the payroll cash and cull all the silver, replacing it with new coins before dispersing it.

Moms got cigar boxes of silver stacked on edge, including a few of Morgans. One day we'll have time to go through them. Safe enough for now.

Guaranteed fake free!

I say that they are the most beautiful US coin ever minted.

$20 at a garage sale last summer. 100 years older than me.

Morgans are very pretty and what started me collecting.

Then I discovered Bust halves...

No. It's pretty cool and takes a 15 dollar coin and turns it into a more valuable ring.

I've got buff nickels, merc dimes, and franklin halves (liberty bell side) that grandpa skeletonized with a jeweler's saw. Cool stuff to hand down.

Dad made rings from halves but the outside is smooth with the printing appearing on the insid15

No I only have collectible star wars coins.  The quarters have little R2D2s on them.  I'm not going to tell you they'll increase their value or even hold their current value.  The truth is I bought them 'cause I like them.  They have value to me and that's what matters.

Yes, and they are all irreplaceable, they arent making them no more thats for sure.
Sure he's not destroying CC Morgans worth thousands but I at least feel its a shame to destroy such nice pieces of Americana.
Even the ones that have been circulated some. Hell, those are the ones that have actually been in the hands of people at that time, used in bars and saloons in the old west, in the 1900s, changing hands and buying God knows what.
Cringes to see them turned into rings really.

What exactly is wrong with taking a few out of TENS OF MILLIONS of morgan dollars and turning them into art?

Would I do it with a BU65 1883 O? No. Common dates are.....common and they're worth about 15 bucks right now.

You'd shit if you saw what I use copper cent pieces for.

Relax.

I've only ever used culls/cleaned/common date coins.

And, as the poster above said, I can take a $15 coin and turn it into something more valuable.

I've posted them for sale on here once in awhile.  I usually charge $90 for my Morgan rings.
