I can't remember who said it, but it was a polar explorer, Its a good things dongs don't live longer or their loss would be devastating.
Something along those lines.

“The Power of the Dog”

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware        5
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie—
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.        10
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs        15
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it’s your own affair—
But … you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).        20
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,        25
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve:        30
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Sorry for your loss. I had to put my last pup down at age 9 in January 2016, bout killed me.

The one I have now acts just like him in so many ways, I almost have to wonder...

Last summer I lost my two 15  year old Shepards within 7 days of one another.

Within the next month I bought two more GSD pups.

They are already the center of our family and we love them every bit as much.

it is how life with dogs work.

there is another dog out there right now waiting for you to take him home.

don't make him wait to long.

Sorry for your loss, we just had to put down, Lucky, the 15 yo family dog this week.  He had too many medical issues and was suffering.  Youngest daughter was able to say goodbye, and we buried him in the backyard.

Pulled from Quote so can be seen again, it can't be said enough.

My Avatar was my best friend, lost him New Years Eve 2015. He set in motion when he was around for me to become involved in rescue of Australian Shepherds, which has led to my creating my own 501c3 Not for Profit dog rescue. There are bitter sweet times and some plain amazing days seeing a dog get adopted and how a family is like many here find them to be one of the best presences in their homes.

Sorry for your loss. We lost our two dogs last year and it was pretty devastating. Our Chinese Pug - Tiffany had to be put down in January due to cancer. She was 11 years old. Our Yorkie - 4 year old - Q-Tip, took I'll suddenly in December and passed away before we could get him to the vet. They both passed away way too young.

A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside... for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements... and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land... for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

We've had our first dogs just for a few years now. Small dogs, like Dixie.

I already have absolutely no idea how I'm going to handle that day when it comes. I dread thinking about it...never had dogs growing up; I never knew just how strong a bond it is.

I'm so sorry
