Since the incident, many voters have expressed interest in changing the votes they have already cast in the special congressional election. According to the Montana Secretary of State's office that is not possible.
For Montanan's that have voted absentee, or cast their votes early, there is no way to change your vote after the fact. Derek Oestreicher, director of elections and voter services for the Secretary of State's office, said: "In Montana, we only vote once." He said the events of the last 24 hours are an example of the issues with an all mail-in-ballot system, noting that those who wait until election day to vote at the polls are often the most informed voters because they have watched the full campaign unfold before casting their ballot. Polls opened at 7 a.m. on Thursday, and will stay open until 8 p.m. |

HAMILTON, Mont. - Turnout at the polls in Ravalli County has been heavier than the elections office had expected.
Elections Administrator Regina Plettenberg said it appears there's been a "newly sparked interest" in this election. Judges at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds in Hamilton were anticipating a "boring" day. But it was busy Thursday morning with a continual steady stream of voters. There were lines. Besides the special Congressional race, Hamilton school district voters have two school ballot issues. One is a $9.75 million bond request. The other is a $400,000 general fund levy request. "That, of course, is always going to spark a little bit more interest and turnout," said Plettenberg. But she said "precincts like Corvallis where they just had the Congressional race on the ballot it's been a very steady day." The administrator said her office staff took some calls from people requesting new absentee ballots because they had thrown their original absentees away and decided they wanted to vote after all. She said there were also several calls from voters who wanted to know if they could change their vote. They can't. Plettenberg said Thursday morning that 80 percent of the absentee ballots have been returned and accepted. She expects that number to climb. |
