So I've been on low carbs since Sunday. Yesterday afternoon, I started having real bad body chills that was almost flu like.
I came home from work and I just went straight to bed. Also feeling nauseous, and I'm squirting like a goose too.
Please tell me this will pass. No more body chills, but I'm sweating like a hog now though.

ETA:
Update:

It's been 3 weeks and I've been coke zero/powerade free for 2 weeks. Have included salads and nuts into my diet too.

Down 2 pant sizes, but still have a long way to go. No side effects like I had the first week.

Better energy level and quality of life has improved.

Based on my urologist's recommendation, I've changed up my eating habits too.

A big breakfast, a moderate lunch, and a small dinner. Also a snack between 3:00PM-4:00PM.

While start back up with weight training next week too.

Was doing 5x5, and did make some good strength gains, but I'm going to try low weights/high reps for a change and keep my target heart rate up.

Of course, I'm all for recommendation on weight training too.

How low carb are you going? Around 50 a day, or less than 20 a day?

Every time I've ever went below 20 a day I get constipated.

So basically eggs, cheese and pig.

Lol

Why don't you diversify a bit with other animals like chicken, fish, and beef. Add some green vegetables, and nuts. Etc.

Your body is use to using carbs as it's fuel. I assume you are on a high fat diet which is actually the bodies preferred fuel of choice. Being it's used to using carbs/sugar, the shaking and chills is probably hypoglycemic shock. Yes it will get better once your body switches to using fat as fuel, and it shouldn't take long. The body is smart.

Here are the Ketosis symptoms according to google:

Symptoms include:

•breath that smells fruity or like nail polish or nail polish remover.
•rapid breathing or shortness of breath.
•excessive thirst.
•frequent urination.
•stomach pain.
•nausea, vomiting.
•fatigue, weakness.
•confusion.

It appears everything you are experiencing in the beginning is normal. Keep up the diet.

What I searched.

I felt pretty grody for about 5 days. After that - smooth sailing .

Drink lots of water and get lots of electrolytes.

I'm Keto, and I do between 20-40g a day. Many people feel like crap for a few days when starting. I didn't, but many do. Lost about 60 lbs over the last few months. Seems great thus far.

Hate to say it, this is perfectly normal..... Nausea, headaches, sweating, chills, fatigue... Google "Carb flu" or "Atkins flu" and you'll see this is all very common.  Your body is essentially going through withdrawls, and that's why all this is happening.

It lasts different amounts of times for different people.  Some as long as two weeks.. most will see the major symptoms pass in 5-8 days, and generally all symptoms are gone in by 14 days.  You'll know as you'll begin to think more clearly, energy will shoot through the roof, etc.  It's different for about everyone how long this will last.

1.  Drink lots, and lots of water.
2.  Even though you probably think otherwise... watch your fiber intake.... You'll go from squirting like a goose to "the Rock of Gibraltar" if you're not careful.  Make sure you're taking a fiber supplement.

Just stick w/ it..

You're going through ketosis. You're going to feel like shit for a little while.

Mix up the diet, different meats, nuts, and vegetables, and stop drinking the coke and the powerade. They are not helping.

I do bacon, ground beef, pork loin, pork rinds, eggs, cheese, and maybe some almonds here and there. I don't like veggies so I really don't eat them.  I do share an apple with my parrot most days. That's where my carb limit comes into play.

I like it.

i personally would avoid the Powerade's and Coke Zero's...

Aspertine/Sucralose can do weird things to different people.  Coffee can trigger different issues w/ some people.  I believe in induction, you're supposed to limit yourself to 16oz a day...

Water, water, water, water, water, water!

Get some electrolytes in you. The keto/atkins flu has been linked to not enough electrolytes, which causes the funky feeling.

Drink a fuck ton of water, then drink some more (don't forget to increase your salt intake).

Get some green veggies in you. Avocados, lettuce (not iceberg), spinach are your friend.

Why would you do that? Carbs are the body's preferred source of energy and help keep muscle. If you are limiting calories keep it balanced. Hit your protein and fat goals and fill the rest with carbs. I'm down 25lbs in 2.5 months and I ate 300g of carbs yesterday.

I can only speak for Robb wolfs paleo.

The first two weeks are pure hell.

After that it's fine. 4 years going strong

ETA: and prob not enough veggies with goose squirt.

Even drinking a lot of water, is really not going to help him very much at this point.  This is the part where he just has to soldier through it.  His body is essentially going through sugar/carb withdrawl.  Everyone who's ever done a low carb/ketogenic diet will go through this in the beginning.

OP, I'll say it again..

1.  Stop the Coke Zero, and Powerade.  Coffee, limit yourself.  I'm assuming you're drinking this black?  If you're going heavy w/ the artificial sweeteners, you really need to break from those as well.  I personally find artificial sweetener disgusting, so I don't drink anything that has them.. that pretty much limits me to unsweetened tea, coffee, and water.  I'm fine w/ that.

2.  Eating some green vegetables can help, but honestly at this point, you need to be careful doing that or you're going to prolong this.  When you are very early, they can actually set you back and make you go through all this again.

3.  Water, water, water, water, water, water, water.

More precisely, OP is going through carb withdrawal.  Next the ketone production will increase; then within a few days his organs will start getting used to actually using the ketones.  This does indeed take a few days to a week-- rarely longer.

But seriously, it is completely worth it.

This is true. But including electrolytes can help at least shorten the time period and/or make it more bearable.

This is what my wife and I use: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EISFBYA?tag=vglnk-c102-20

Doesn't taste all that awesome, but it works wonders.

I hear the fizz tablets are pretty good though, but some can have a strong fake sugar taste in them.

3.  Water, water, water, water, water, water, water.
OP best be on board for liking water more then Michael Phelps

Cut out anything but coffee or unsweetened tea or more water though. Diet drinks aren't all that great for you, and actually caused me to plateau for a while. There have been studies done that show aspartame actually can modify the gut bacteria, and not in a good way - so watch intake of aspartame. I don't know about the effects of other fake sugars though.

Best of luck OP. On the other side of the flu feeling, you'll have a lot more energy. My stamina is shit, but I found I was able to recover a lot faster, and keep going back for more longer.

OP, this is NOT a list of foods for someone trying to get into ketosis.  Paleo is not keto.

If ketosis is your goal, and it should be, there's a ton of stuff on this list-- like all the fruits, and the frickin'  honey for God's sake-- that will prevent you from transitioning.

Tough it out.

Carbs aren't an essential nutrient but there's plenty of evidence suggesting they are ideal to incorporate in to a diet for energy and to maintain muscle mass. If you don't care about muscle mass or having the best energy levels then by all means go keto.

I'm calling BS on this statement.  I hear it a lot, but a mere 50g of carbs per day takes you out of ketosis.  If the body prefers fat as energy, I wouldn't think it would be so hard to stay in ketosis.  I'm willing to be enlightened though...so please tell me how a single bottle of soda can take someone from preferring to burn fat for fuel to burning carbs instead...if fat is the preferred energy source.

ETA:

I'm not saying that fat isn't the better source of energy, I'm just questioning whether or not the body recognizes this is the case.  It seems to me like staying in ketosis is a delicate thing which can be reversed quite easily.

You know nothing about nutrition. Keto is a fad diet that you've clearly hopped on. Listen to the scientists and guys that really know what they are doing. No serious athlete does keto, there's a reason for that.

"The first reason being that carbohydrates are much more muscle sparing than fats during times of stress when glucose becomes a primary source of fuel (i.e. anaerobic exercise, injury, infection, etc). The muscle sparing effects of carbohydrates occur via several different mechanisms. When the body is in a low energy state, it may try to produce energy by converting amino acids to glucose. Carbohydrates prevent this since they can be easily broken down (and converted if need be) to glucose molecules. Carbohydrates then spare dietary protein from oxidation and these proteins can be stored rather than oxidized.Carbohydrates are also very muscle sparing during exercise. When one lifts heavy weights, the primary pathway that is used to produce ATP (cellular energy currency) is the anaerobic or glycolytic pathway (as the name implies this pathway operates in the absence of oxygen). The only substrate for this pathway is glucose, which can be obtained from dietary carbohydrates or by breaking down glycogen (the cell’s stored form of glucose)."

OP, you might get more helpful and/or consistent info in the keto thread:

The only substrate for this pathway is glucose, which can be obtained from dietary carbohydrates or by breaking down glycogen (the cell’s stored form of glucose)."

a FAD?  LOL.

Seriously, if you're gonna just post links to try and make your arguments, you need to verify your sources.  There is a TON of science that supports a keto diet.

Not everyone gets "keto flu". I've never had it any of the 4 or 5 times I've done a keto cycle, but the ketone test strips say I'm in ketosis.

I'm in middle GA. Hoping it's just the "carb flu" and not a bug.

We're in the same area and my wife, son, and I all got a stomach bug a week and a half ago. It's going around.

You are eating less than 20 grams of carbs a day?   That is not healthy.

Why not?

Carbs aren't an essential nutrient but there's plenty of evidence suggesting they are ideal to incorporate in to a diet for energy and to maintain muscle mass. If you don't care about muscle mass or having the best energy levels then by all means go keto.

In before someone says "See, this is your body telling you it needs carbs!!!!"

Like it tells you it needs alcohol, or heroin.  It will tell you those lies too.

Lol. Does it hurt to be so wrong? I've been in keto for 3 weeks and have been gaining strength. This isn't my first go 'round, so it's not newb gains.

I don't really get it anymore.... when I did it the very first time... I was miserable (pretty much everything the OP mentioned) for about 9 days.

Now?  Usually I'll just be a bit fatigued for a few days.

Also, those strips... they're not really all that accurate.  I don't even use them anymore.  I "just know" when I'm there by how I'm feeling, thinking, energy, etc.  New keto dieters that are testing their piss 4x a day kill me...

It's easier for the body to get energy from sugar than fat. That's why the body will jump on the opportunity to use sugar when it's there.

My wife got all of the typical keto flu symptoms, but I have never had any negative symptoms. I just get the huge rush of energy and fat loss.

Make a few cups of bone broth or bullion.  You have decreased plasma volume, and that is making you feel sick.  Water and salt.  I would personally use Lite Salt, which is sodium chloride and potassium chloride.

June 15 will be one year on the KD for me.  I have an occasional Cherry Coke Zero, and I drink a lot of decaf coffee.  I use cream in the coffee, and whipped cream on top.  Absolutely delicious.

Here's a resource for you I just found out about -  www.cronometer.com

The web-based version is free, and the iPhone version is cheap.  You can track all of your exercise and food items.  The display is nice, and most foods are already listed for you.

I was sick as a dog for two weeks after I started KD.  But I had attended to the gf, who had a bad cold, right before.  I think I caught what she had, so I have no way of knowing whether I had the K flu or the flu flu.

They call that the Keto Flu (serious). I don't do ketogenic for cutting anymore, but I do PSMF which shares the zero carb aspect. The first couple days are always kinda cruddy. Assuming this is all it is, your diet is sound, and you don't have any underlying health complications; *it should go away after about day 3*.
