Wow, and nobody claimed the OP was a Chinese spy and they need to figure it out on their own
I have wondered how well a USS Nimitz with full battle load would do against say the USS America with 12 F-35 VSTOL craft. I know that is another topic and I assume one that has been argued before. |

I don't know how you squids stand it, all cooped up on a ship with nothing much to do but your duty and to get on each others nerves...it was hard enough in the Army in a big old base on the ground with room to spread out.
I can't even imagine sub life. |

Generally speaking all US Navy warship have many more personnel than are necessary to get from point A to B. In addition to the safe operation and maintenance requirements warships are expect to go into battle. That means that you must have enough personnel to conduct operations, war fighting, and damage control. That means a lot of people.

Could probably cut it down a good deal if we only did sweepers once a day, and scratched all FOD walkdowns and field days.
In all seriousness, they aren't 5k most of the time, and it could be less if a lot of rates upped their watch and duty rotations, but you gotta sleep sometime. |

My question is do they get large norovirus outbreaks like cruise ships, and how does that effect their readiness? View Quote Medical screenings prior to boarding, cleaning procedures, easier to order a sick sailor to see medical and quarantine/restrict movement on the ship vs a civilian whose paid their way. Plus cruise ships probably have many more areas where large numbers of people gather that aid infection spreading. Pools, multiple restaurants/buffets, bars, night clubs, theaters, casinos, day care centers etc etc. |
