Should I fo?
PSA $129.00

I want it reliable, but it will most likely just be a trunk gun.

UPDATE: I fent and purchased the above lower and the lower below. I already have a carry handle so I should be complete on this build.

PSA Upper

$388 before the $30 transfer fee. Total: $418

Update: 5/4/17

I ordered the following PSA lower:

This Complete Palmetto State Armory lower is fully assembled and ready for your complete Upper!
Machined from Aluminum Forgings 7075-T6
Hardcoat Anodizing: MIL-A-8625F, Type III, Class 2
Milspec diameter Receiver Extension
M4 Stock
Staked M4 Lock Nut
Standard Carbine Buffer
Un-notched Hammer compatible with 9mm use
Caliber: Multi

The guy at the shop who received it today says IT MUST have the following work done to it or I am basically risking my life on an unreliable gun:

Hone and polish the bolt and chamber
change the buffer to an H buffer
and change the Spring to mil-spec.

Is this necessary considering what I purchased, or is he just trying to make a buck?

Why wouldn't it be reliable? It is just a lower.

Fo. Nothing wrong with that lower. I'd be surprised if you even find the cosmetic blem.

I think thats what I used on my beater AR.  Don't know how many rounds but I have not cleaned in the 2 years I've owned it.  So far, no problems.

Bought several of their blem lowers and couldn't find any issue.  I highly suspect their blem line is to just sell lowers cheaper and avoid backlash when they later raise their prices during a panic.

Buy three stripped lowers.  Use parts of your choosing.  Build three truck guns.

With a $30 transfer fee, I'm looking at $159. Then its off to buy the upper.

Upper

Thoughts? Can I probably get another complete upper for a better price? (Non EE).

[#11]
Of course! I've built many an AR from PSA over the years, with nary a problem.

Only exception being a weak extractor on my first PSA build, nothing since.

I'm not in the Valley all the time. I get that a lot because of my Username. I should have thought that through a bit more. I juggle my time, and live, between West Texas, North Texas, and the RGV because of work. I only own homes in West Texas and the RGV. This isn't going to get shipped to the RGV. Sorry if that doesn't help you.

I still can't quite find the logic in going cheap on something you would use to protect yourself or your loved ones.

Rec7 being given that "driven around the ranch" look last weekend.

So, the $129.00 complete lower, the $269.00 complete upper (yet to buy), and the $30 transfer fee will put me at $428.00. I have an extra carry handle so that's covered. How much cheaper could I get it without building it myself?

Smoother recoil impulse.
Less wear on parts.
Can attach a bayonet...
Looks better (if that matters).
Less wear on brass (doesn't matter if you don't reload.)
Longer sight radius if you have a FSB...
Longer handguards, more grip area.

What about a pencil profile upper and premium bolt?

It is only a few dollars more and you get a lighter upper and a slightly better bolt.

How have pencil thin barrels worked out for you? I have always heard, (take that for what it's worth) that they heat up way too quickly.

Secondly, what makes that bolt slightly better than the one on the completed upper?

I'm putting together a rifle with the nitride pencil upper for my daughter.  I went for this profile for the weight savings. I also got the PSA premium bolt group and charging handle together for 89.00. FWIW, the "pencil" barrel is the same diameter as the M16A1's used in service for years, including during the Vietnam war. You would have a hard time getting it hot enough firing semi auto to cause any damage. You would have to rip through mag after mag after drum like one of those ignorant torture tests you see on youtube. As for the bolt, I'm not sure the difference would be consequential for most shooters. I've got a non MPI bolt in an M4gery that has thousands of rounds and years of service. I've never had a problem with it. I bought the premium bolt group because it came with a charging handle, and I needed both.

So it would be $199 for the upper
$89 for the Premium bolt carrier
and $19-$24 for a charging handle?

or $129 for the lower (already purchased) and $312 for the upper= $441+$30 TF which= $471

$471 vs $428 is a $43 difference for what is essentially some loss of overall weight.

I'm not sure this is worth it. If you can, please help me see your thought process.

Complain about it in industry, first.

Only do the cutting after the company offers resolution.

Yeah, I saw that, but no free shipping. I guess it would still be cheaper than buying the charging handle separately however.

Get a mid length. There's no reason to get a carbine gas system with a 16 inch barrel.

I have heard this a lot. 14.5 is supposed to work best with carbine, so I've been told. If nothing else the 16 will give a longer sight radius, and I plan on using an A2 style carry handle.

BLEM PSA 16" Classic Freedom M4 FDE Upper - with BCG and Charging Handle - 7779344B    Daily Deal for $239.99 shipped.

I'll be the odd-man out and say purchase the above.  Already comes complete with a high-quality PSA BCG and a standard PSA charging-handle.  Carbine-gas is fine.  Even comes with North Texas handguards!

Well, I purchased this upper. I figured its a good compromise. If I'm reading it correctly, it's a carbine upper but with a 16" barrel. Any opinions on how I did?
