space "ship"

You pilot a riverboat...

We should really defer to an expert on the matter. In "The Highwayman", Johnny Cash sings "I fly a starship".

If Johnny Cash says fly a starship, then that's the proper term.

Unless'n you're calling Johnny Cash a liar. In which case we may have words.

Why not Captain a spaceship

Is it? Space is a vaccum. Does a ship actually float in a vaccum?

But likewise, they don't really fly either, because there is no atmosphere in which to fly.

I think we need a new term to describe what they do.

So are you flying the spaceship until you leave earths atmosphere? Fly would seem to be the right term to me, but piloting also sounds correct.

Depends on the descriptive usage. For instance the crew operated the spacecraft in an remarkable manner. Or Commander Zero piloted the spacecraft to dockage.

Does your spaceship have a (solar) sail?  If not, then probably not sailing.

So...

"I'm going to con my spaceship from Mars to Jupiter".

"I'm going to master my spaceship from Mars to Jupiter".

"I'm going to command my spaceship from Mars to Jupiter"

None of those really sound right to me.

Are you the pilot?  If so you're piloting the spacecraft.

For convenience sake it will probably be referred to as "flying" your spacecraft to Jupiter.

You're right of course, in space there's nothing to float on, everything is falling.

but earthly aeronautics don't apply either, there's no drag against thrust and lift is meaningless in vacuum while you can't tell the difference between grav and acceleration.

I'm tempted to say navigate, but the term betrays its earth navy roots.

Astrogate?  I feel certain that location and bearing are determined by "shooting" certain stars.

I don't think pilot or piloting is quite accurate enough.

For example... The Space Shuttle.  The person in the Pilot seat... with the job title Space Shuttle Pilot... unless something bad has happened doesn't actually Pilot the shuttle.  They act more like a co-pilot to the real pilot...  The commander.

To quote Douglas Adams, "Eskimos had over two hundred different words for snow, without which their conversation would probably have got very monotonous."

Replace Eskimos with Astronauts and Snow with Space. That's about sums up this issue for me.

If you have your own space ship you do whatever the heck you want to with it!. Though, it's worth noting that astronauts are Pilots and space travel is under the domain of the FAA....

Spaceships are for acrobats who are also mathematicians.

And that's the beauty of a powered suit: you don't have to think about it. You don't have to drive it, fly it, conn it; you just wear it and it takes orders directly from your muscles and does for you what your muscles are trying to do.

IIRC it was a fully operational space station.

So you

Operate a space station.

If I remember right, on DS9 Commander Sisko and his son Jake sailed a space ship on the solar winds in to Cardashain territory.    The ship had huge sails to catch the solar wind.
