Yes it's long but it's a reasonable, well done test of these two calibers.

Watching now, will watch in more detail after work...

Right off the top of my head I would say comparing the heavy 180 grain .40 loading to the light 115 grain 9mm loading is a mistake. Gold dot 124 and 165 grain would have been better.

But hey, the guy is doing science in that he is testing and showing the results.

Good video. He's obviously a good shooter.

If you keep watching he does test Hornaday Critical Duty in both calibers.

This again? Why can't we just leave it at "carry what you shoot best?"

The tiny differences between the two cartridges are insignificant, even more so when you realize the likelihood of you having to use it on a living target are very slim.

Decent video, though he should've used Federal 124 gn HST's as a relevant comparable to the duty grade 40's.

He is a good shooter, and the simulated meat target was entertaining.

There isnt a battle, the market is running away at speed from the 40. The only people buying them are brand new shooters, police officers who have no choice and those looking for a cheap gun. We literally put 40 cal versions of used pistols at $75-100 less than the 9mm version, the 9mm still moves faster.

Very few "carry" 115gr 9x19mm. 124gr or 147gr would be more of a "standard" defensive load.

Want to know how I know you didn't watch all of the video?

Rather than be cryptic, I will tell you.  He also compared 135g 9mm to 175g .40, both Hornady critical duty, as well as ball ammo through different media.  Seemed like a pretty fair test to me.

Here is what I gathered from the video:

- .40 has more energy than 9mm.  This is a proveable fact; math and physics don't lie.
- .40 is as inherently accurate as 9mm
- 9mm allows for faster follow up shots
- 9mm will give you two more rounds in a full size double stack magazine
- If you select the proper ammunition for 9mm (heavier bullet weight with bonded core), performance will pretty much equal .40
- This guy knows how to shoot a handgun.  People who don't know how to shoot a handgun will benefit very little from any of the advantages of either caliber

.40 wins second place because with a simple barrel swap you can shoot it in the same guns as the first place 357 SIG.

I like them all.
I have several 45s, 40s, and 9s, and feel comfortable with the stopping power of every one.
They each fill a spot in my collection and each serve their own purpose.
In typical ARFCOM fashion, get them all!

I have.  My agency issued it for a little while and it was standard for FBI's load for a few years when they were carrying Glocks in .40.

We currently use a 180 grain load in our issued Sig 229 pistols.  For almost a decade, we were using a 155g JHP with a velocity of 1,250 fps.  That's 535 fpe kiddos - hardly short and weak.

I currently carry a G19 loaded with agency issued 124g +P Speer Gold Dot JHP.  Not necessarily because I prefer 9mm, but rather because I prefer the Glock 19 over the Sig 229.

Both will put a man down if you make your hits.

The .40 vs. 9mm debate on here is ridiculous.  .40 isn't going anywhere.  Just a few gun store commandos that wish it would.  Reminds me of the same blather that was thrown around a decade ago by internet warriors about 5.56 being an ineffective mouse gun caliber and that the military should only carry 12 lb. rifles with wood stocks chambered in at least .308.

That's all I shoot out of my .40 cal. S&W. It really, really likes that ammo. The 40 was designed around 180 Gr but I think 165 Gr is actually a better fit for it.

PS: With today's loads they are both very capable calibers. Contrary to a lot of opinions the .40 is as popular as ever.

Actually until my agency followed the FBI last year and went back to 9mm, we issued and carried 165 gr Gold Dots since I was hired in 1998.  It remained our carry load until about last October.

If it makes you feel any better, I am carrying a G43 in my pocket right now. I do not shoot it better, but today is an office day so my G23 stays in the truck.  If Glock releases a 40 in the same size I will probably trade the G43 in for it.

He is a fairly stout man. My arms are certainly not as big as hams, and most female arms surely are not that large. The difference between 9mm recoil and 40S&W recoil in my hands is quite significant. I do agree that 40S&W hits harder, and I think that's obvious.

The question was never which one hits harder, but is whether the 9mm is sufficient. You get less recoil, more ammo, and a lower sound signature (especially in 147gr subsonic) with 9mm. So if it can penetrate as deep, which he proved it could, then I'd call that satisfactory.

To be fair, I believe officers who can shoot a 40 as well as a 9mm should be able to carry 40.

Even if the 40 or 45 is a little bit more effective
Even if the 40 or 45 doesn't have more kick
Even if the 40 and 45 are just as accurate
Even if the 40 and 45 ammo is the same price

...I'd still want more rounds especially in the world today!

What he forgot to say is that when stressed, when the target is moving and shooting back you wont have the best shot placement.

Think of the cop that shot the thug (already forgot his name) 6 times before stopping him.
What if there are 2 or 3 bad guys like the recent shooting where the kid killed the 3 home invaders with the AR15.

Eight 45 cal rounds for 3 bad guys would not make me feel comfortable especially if they were shooting back at me

Try drawing and shooting when you aren't expecting a fight. Try moving and shooting and see how accurate you are. Then add moving targets. Then move and shoot with moving targets that are shooting at you.

So, in the real world there is more than just shooting a stationary targets.

Everyone keeps focusing on the caliber. But, there is more to it in the real world.

So, there can be more than one bad guy and shootings do have more than 2 or 3 rounds fired.

Eight 45 cal rounds for 3 bad guys would not make me feel comfortable especially if they were shooting back at me. Nor would a pocket pistol in 9mm with 6 shots.

Try drawing and shooting when you aren't expecting a fight and see how accurate your shots are. Try moving/shooting and see how accurate you are. Then add moving targets. Then move and shoot with moving targets that are shooting at you.

So, in the real world there is more than just shooting at stationary targets, concrete blocks or gel.

Maybe I'm wrong... but, to me a good weapon with more smaller quality rounds is better than a good weapon with less but larger rounds.

You boys love to keep them fires lit with these endless debates.

They solve nothing really, no one changes their minds really and no matter how many times somebody beats their chest yelling capacity, it will not win sides.

Good grief, carry what carries well to you, is easy to conceal for you, and shoots the best in your hands. That is the only answer right there and whatever caliber it is and in what capacity, is trivial and subjective really no matter how many idiots try to make excuses to justify their decisions.

Agreed. In the end the argument always boils down to how many rounds you can carry in the mag. Doesn't matter if it's 8 or 18 if you practice and can hit what you aim at. If you think spray and pray to empty the clip is the answer you might want to find a different approach.
