Good point on the "oops, my sign fell apart" excuse. A decent piece of fiberglass rod should do nicely, and if the end splinters it would suck even worse to get hit with since fiberglass splinters are a bitch to get out

What the lefties do is use a long piece of 1" dowel, and drill a hole in one end. Then you screw the biggest, heaviest lag bolt you can find into the hole. That adds a lot of weight on the end, and it looks like just a normal, boring stick.
