Some years ago, I drove a Winston West car at Fontana (one of those driving experience deals).
168 mph going into Turn 1, the lateral Gs felt like it was going to spit you out the passenger side window

These Cup cars are bombing it into Turn 1 at over two-oh-ten

Maybe even faster with this low (no) downforce aero package.
Damn near 170 was borderline insane, imagine 40 mph on top of that

This racetrack is hard on engines.
They're turning 9k+ all day, and the tach pretty much just hangs there.
The valvetrain never gets a break

Best I can tell, they still get the position of finish on their record, but there's fines, suspensions, and loss of points that happen.

They just talked about it on the practice coverage. That finishing position can't count towards making it to the playoffs. So basically, no points to aid in advancing.

They just explained that "encumbered" means those points don't count towards the chase and therefore a championship. They'll need to win in order to get into the chase now or make up a whole lot of points.

So the points are still there, they just don't count.

I don't know. But I would guess yes if the penalty was given on a winning car. But I really don't know.

I can see with the new stage points how it could affect making the playoffs. Last year Smoke had a win, but was not a shoo in for the Chase with that win, he still had to make it with points. Hell, Larson doesn't have a win this year, and he's sitting on top of the leaderboard in points. Get enough penalties and not get scored because of it, I think a win doesn't make it a shoo in to be in the playoffs anymore.

The thing I really wonder is if it affects any points they might have gotten in the stages. Are all points from that race void, or just the points for overall finish?

And, I'll say it again, I need to stop being poor and get more of this coverage.

Are these "cable" channels on streaming services? The wife refuses to get satellite TV.

Link to penalties from last week.

So far all the Cup races have been on rabbit ears Fox, only qualifying, practice, and Xfinity races have been on FS1.

Expect that to change in a couple weeks though, and it will be all cable for watching until NBC takes over with their coverage.

I would ass-u-me as long as a driver starts every race in a season and has a clean win, the win would count. Smoke didn't start every race.

With all the new points in the stages, kind of makes you wonder.

If stage racing had been in place last year, I don't think Buescher would have made the Chase. Got a win on a fluke, and barely made it on points as it was.
