Check Craigslist or Ebay for a used Penn International or Shimano Tiagra. You may have to bump your budget up a little.

My son's 73" 175 lb tarpon is finally on the wall as of tonight.  (The Gray's Taxidermy replica...caught in Islamorada last May).  It's a fucking giant.

I digress...you will want a 5000-7000 series spinning reel as a minimum for that size fish.  Depending on the type of fish, you might choose a "bait cast" or a spinning reel...I like bait casters for sharks...they require a winch.

Oh yeah...expect to spend WAY more than that...I don't have a single reel under $200.  My "big fish" reels are considerably more.

Guessing it's not for Muskie but going to the sea for some fishing?

You can catch an 87 lb fish on 8.7 lb test line.

A Penn in the 50/70 class and a good rod will work

The terminal tackle is almost if not more important.

Beat by a guy with a serious fishing tackle budget.

ETAA.

Lolol
Never mind you ain't paying $700 for a Penn 50vs

You don't need 200lb line to catch 200lb fish. I have caught many fish over 200lbs on 20lb line and under. Most of the fish were sharks. A few marlin and swordfish.

If you goal is just the biggest weight go after a shark. Most guides will measure and guesstimate the weight.

I've brought in 300-400 pound fish on fairly light tackle...nothing more than a small Avet reel....it doesn't take massive equipment to land big fish...focus more on your terminal tackle, knots, technique, and skill with the equipment you own.

I'm not real familiar with the lakes.  What is big in there? - IIRC from fishing shows and a couple friends that used to fish there -  mackinaw, steelhead, lake run run salmon (coho ?).  None of those will get any where near 200 lb class gear.

Learn the basics of terminal tackle and especially how to set your drag.

There is nothing,  I mean NOTHING,  you can't stop with a quality reel and 50lb braid in freshwater.

Ah, gotcha!   Saw  a documentary once where a couple guys put a chunk of roast beef on a big hook tied to a chain.  They rowed it out a ways and dropped it off.   Technique almost worked, dock was a little too light though IIRC.

Why? You don't need 200lb line.

But this is your party so go by a Shimano Tiagra 130.

What? If you're gonna land a 200lb fish you need 200lb line.

No way you could use 100lb or whatever and ware the fish out.

Only the best fishermen cowboy the fish in.

^^^^^ Saltwater charter fishing captain.

You need to learn how to fish, not a reel that holds 200lb line.

Sure OP get a Penn International 80VSW. It will hold over 2000 yards of 200lb braid, enough to land anything in the ocean or lake.

Or you could just get any midsized spinning reel with 40lb and have more than enough reel to land anything in the lake.
